So, the remains of Richard III have been discovered beneath a car park in Leicester. My inner historian is absolutely fascinated. That corpse is five centuries old and they managed to find it and make a positive ID: the last English sovereign to die in battle. Makes me want to study that period all over again!

Lol, when I saw the tag I knew this is what the entry would be about! ;) The Tudortalk yahoo group I'm on has been excitedly chatting about this dig/testing for months (and the Univ of Leicester was so excited to talk about it when they first discovered the remains that they accidentally forgot to include the jobs in a museum job listing email, lol). And several major US newspapers, including thr Wall Street Journal of all places, have had front page stories about it since the remains were first discovered. It's nice to finally have the verdict!

It's wonderful that they were able to get a positive ID, and that they have already been able to bring new details to light, like the fact that Richard died of his wounds after the battle instead of a direct killing blow during it...fascinating stuff! This is such a fascinating time indeed...if you are looking for some good TV to watch about the period, I think the BBC miniseries about Henry VII/the War of the Roses, "The Shadow of the Tower" or something, is out on DVD now and is supposedly decent...
