Have actually written some fic. All blame for this is attached to [livejournal.com profile] joe_sweden, who nagged me until I caved and started writing.

This is a Doctor Who/Rome crossover. Have never written for either fandom before, so I hope the characters read okay. The perspective is from the Doctor Who characters; no knowledge of Rome is required before reading this story.

Disclaimer: Not a single one of these characters or scenarios belongs to me, alas. This story slots in between The Doctor Dances and Boomtown in season one of Doctor Who, and during the Rome season one episode Utica. A chunk of dialogue during the dinner scene is drawn directly from the transcript of Utica, with apologies to the writers and programme makers for taking such liberties with their work.

This is for [livejournal.com profile] joe_sweden, because she told me to do it and then for some reason I did. The prompt was: 'write a fic about the Doctor, Jack and Rose meeting Julius Caesar and being invited to dinner (courtesy of some psychic paper shenanigans) with him and Brutus. Bonus points if you get an "et tu Brute" joke in there.' This is probably not quite what she had in mind…

Hope no one's expecting much in the way of plot out of this one, beyond the Who basics of 'land, poke around a bit, and then leave again'.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO KELLY!!

The first episode of Rome season two aired on BBC2 last night. Man, I'd forgotten what a heartbreaking episode that is, picking up in the direct wake of so much tragedy. The contrast of Caesar's state funeral and Niobe's small, simple little send off...Vorenus so broken after losing his entire family, and Pullo trying so hard to take care of his friend in the same way that Vorenus has always been there for him. Mark Antony floundering without Caesar there to guide him; he's an excellent soldier and an excellent deputy, but nature did not intend for him to be a politician, and that's his problem for the entire season to come. Octavian still so young and earnest. Atia and Servilia's feud at its height. Brutus and Cassius struggling with what they've done. The end of Erastes Fulmen. Ah, every time I watch this show I fall in love with the characters all over again. It's a shame so many of them die in the course of the show, but this was, after all, a particularly bloody period in history.

I think the Beeb might have filmed their last in my building last week, because the courtroom is now being ripped up to be converted into a proper meeting room. Shame - it was kinda cool having a fully fitted courtroom on the premises! The BBC Wales certainly found it useful; they are going to have to find another location for court scenes now. Dunno if they will continue to use the room upstairs, but they won't be filming courtroom scenes here any more.

And I'm sure I had something else to say this morning, but I'm blowed if I can remember what it was!

Posted a few more of the icons I've been experimenting with to my website. None of them brilliant, but I'm still learning. Just upgraded my copy of Photoshop to 7.0, which means lots of new buttons to get used to! I might yet end up being scared back to Elements 2.0...

Samples:

And the rest can be found here:
Supernatural
The Professionals
Life on Mars
Rome
Miscellaneous

Ooh, also, check out the very pretty and oh so cool LoM banner made for me by the lovely [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb, whose art everyone should check out:

Bought a pair of new shoes yesterday and then completely forgot to take them home with me. Madness! They're sandals, Wranglers, ready for the summer. The Wranglers sandals I've currently got have been my favourites for years now, the only shoes I can ever remember having that have never given me even a single blister. But I've worn them to death, quite literally - they are falling to bits and really, really won't last another summer. Wranglers no longer make the same style, but the ones I bought yesterday are the closest they've come in a while, so hopefully they will do.

Brother Mine has got a new job - or, rather, an internal promotion/transfer. He works for Fujitsu, IT support on the telephones. So if anyone phoned a helpline for any number of internet providers because of technical troubles, my brother was one of the people on the other end of the line. And that's always worked well, because although he can't talk to people face to face, he's really good at providing IT support on the telephone. But recently he's had to do other stuff as well, like billing, and hates it. So not he's got this internal transfer to a more specialist department and won't be doing telephone work at all. No clue what the technical title is, but what he will be doing is diagnosing more complex computer problems that come in, that the ordinary telephone people can't resolve, and then issuing work orders to engineers to go out and repair. To my ignorant ears it sounds kinda like House - differential diagnosis for computers!

[livejournal.com profile] rhianne recently posted a list of top five canon h/c moments that had inspired her...except that this top five was actually a top ten, five of which were from Supernatural. Understandable, since if ever a show invited h/c, it's SN! And that got me thinking about some of my own favourite moments (which is the point where [livejournal.com profile] galathea_snb faints away dead on the spot at the very idea of me making a list!). Actually, it's tempting to just repost [livejournal.com profile] rhianne's SN moments as I agree with them all! But I shall make myself do the list thing for myself, because I never do.

I enjoy a spot of good, strong h/c, I really do, but I find on reflection that my top moments in fandom, any fandom, tend to be a more random mixture, sometimes h/c and sometimes tiny moments where the strength of a partnership/friendship really shines through, significant moments in the development of an onscreen relationship, or tiny moments that illuminate a particular aspect of a character's personality.

'Ware possible spoilers herein for more than one show:

Okay, so. Spent most of the weekend asleep, after running a fever all day Friday. Saturday's kind of a blur, actually. Sunday I was fine until mid afternoon, then faded fast. Looked in a mirror and was all, 'hey, where did the colour go?' Made it into work yesterday, exhausted myself, and decided I needed another day indoors in the warm to try to really knock this thing on the head. Not that staying home got me out of working entirely, though, as I've been on call for the new and inexperienced volunteer who was in today, and had a couple of calls requiring talking her through technical difficulties.

Still. In the midst of all this illness, I got some TV watching in. Mostly, this involved many, many hours of Grey's Anatomy season two, discs so kindly donated by [livejournal.com profile] nikkimisplaced. So far? Loving it. Such a soap opera, perfect for curling up in front of while ill. But I've also seen the final episode of Judge John Deed, plus new season two episodes of Supernatural and Rome. Coherent thought has been escaping me for days now, but I shall give it a go!
