Have finally cracked and written a letter of complaint to my landlord about Him Upstairs. This stupid guy keeps on waking me up by playing loud music in the middle of the night, and it isn't even good music. It isn't every night, nor even every week, but it does happen on a regular basis, and I am way beyond sick of it. It is extremely anti-social and, frankly, I have better things to do at 3am than listen to someone else's horrendous taste in music! Last night was a good example. The music woke me up at about 2.30am, and I spent about half an hour trying to tune out the thumping beat and tuneless caterwauling and get back to sleep, to no avail. Then at 3am I gave in, went upstairs, and thumped on his door as loud as possible until he finally couldn't ignore me any more, and then fumed at him to turn the music off. He didn't, but did turn it down, although it was still on the edges of my hearing. And this never stops him doing it again - he doesn't always even open the door when I knock. Then, between me being thoroughly woken up and him stomping around in a snit, I couldn't get back to sleep all night. Dozed lightly between 5.30 and 6am, but that was it. And I have a job interview this morning, which I now have to go to with my brain feeling like tapioca.

Yep, letter of complaint to the landlord going in the post this morning. Along with a list of long-overdue maintenance issues for his attention, including that security light out the back that he assured me would be fixed after I spotted that prowler back in the spring, but never has been.

Yeah, I'm feeling kind of curmudgeonly this morning. Need to channel some zen before the interview, I think!

Edit - oh, but in other news, one of my cousins and his partner had their second son yesterday, congratulations to them. He's called Evan, which...doesn't exactly go with Luca, which is their older boy's name. Taking both sides of the family into consideration, that is now 15 babies in 12 years - and 12 of them have been boys! Where did all the girls go? Madness.

Oh how horrible - I hope your landlord feels able to do something... Are there other people in the building that might be upset by him as well, or is it just you? The police/council will help, but you have to record the noise/disturbance/frequency for quite a while before they're able to take action (or at least that was the case... well, 10 years ago come to think of it - maybe it's more effective now!) Be worth threatening him with it though, maybe...

Congrats on the new bairn though - little bit of nice news for the day at least!

I think I'm probably the worst affected, as his main living area is directly above my flat. Maybe the person above him also suffers from the noise, but I don't know. I should probably have been keeping a record for months of the disturbances, but never got around to it. I do have a mental tally of a few more notable incidents if Landlord wants a few specifics, though. He did actually come down to apologise this evening, which is a turn up for the books - I've gone up there to complain in the middle of the night before, and he always pretended it hadn't happened afterward. But then again, last time there was a disturbance - when he brought home a few drunken friends who had a brawl on the doorstep - I threatened to call the police. So maybe he's a little wary of me now! Hopefully he really will stick to his promise to keep the noise down in future.
