Have finally cracked and written a letter of complaint to my landlord about Him Upstairs. This stupid guy keeps on waking me up by playing loud music in the middle of the night, and it isn't even good music. It isn't every night, nor even every week, but it does happen on a regular basis, and I am way beyond sick of it. It is extremely anti-social and, frankly, I have better things to do at 3am than listen to someone else's horrendous taste in music! Last night was a good example. The music woke me up at about 2.30am, and I spent about half an hour trying to tune out the thumping beat and tuneless caterwauling and get back to sleep, to no avail. Then at 3am I gave in, went upstairs, and thumped on his door as loud as possible until he finally couldn't ignore me any more, and then fumed at him to turn the music off. He didn't, but did turn it down, although it was still on the edges of my hearing. And this never stops him doing it again - he doesn't always even open the door when I knock. Then, between me being thoroughly woken up and him stomping around in a snit, I couldn't get back to sleep all night. Dozed lightly between 5.30 and 6am, but that was it. And I have a job interview this morning, which I now have to go to with my brain feeling like tapioca.

Yep, letter of complaint to the landlord going in the post this morning. Along with a list of long-overdue maintenance issues for his attention, including that security light out the back that he assured me would be fixed after I spotted that prowler back in the spring, but never has been.

Yeah, I'm feeling kind of curmudgeonly this morning. Need to channel some zen before the interview, I think!

Edit - oh, but in other news, one of my cousins and his partner had their second son yesterday, congratulations to them. He's called Evan, which...doesn't exactly go with Luca, which is their older boy's name. Taking both sides of the family into consideration, that is now 15 babies in 12 years - and 12 of them have been boys! Where did all the girls go? Madness.

Can you not phone the environmental health department of your local council - they can take action against this happening.

I'm surprised you didn't call the police about him putting on his music in the middle of the night!

Heh. I threatened him with the police one time, when he brought home a posse of drunken friends who proceeded to have a brawl on the doorstep! I had Small sleeping over and she was petrified. But that was also the reason I didn't actually make the call (that and that the threat worked and they all dispersed) - I didn't want the disruption all night.

Still, the complaint has been posted. And he came around to apologise this evening. We'll see if he mends his ways this time.

Here's hoping!

Its maybe worth keeping a diary so you have evidence of when he is playing his music to show that it is anti-social.

Oh, I was rude earlier in not saying good luck for your interview. I hope it went well.

No, not rude at all - thank you for the thought.

It went okay, I think, but I can never really tell. It doesn't really matter how well I do in interview, or how much they seem to like me - it is all about the competition and how much better they do, or how much more experience they have, or whatever. We shall see what comes. I'm not getting my hopes up, as I've been disappointed too many times already.

Sorry you're still suffering with the bloke upstairs and his music - how thoughtless he is. :/

Good luck with the interview. :)

Thanks, Janet.

Him Upstairs did actually come down to apologise this evening, but it is too late - the complaint has been posted!

I hope your landlord gives him a stern warning! What an inconsiderate arsehole!

I've got my fingers crossed for you. Hope the interview goes well. :)

Thank you! I have no clue how the interview went - it went. I think I was coherent, but by the time I got home I was practically comatose. Early night tonight, methinks.

Oh how horrible - I hope your landlord feels able to do something... Are there other people in the building that might be upset by him as well, or is it just you? The police/council will help, but you have to record the noise/disturbance/frequency for quite a while before they're able to take action (or at least that was the case... well, 10 years ago come to think of it - maybe it's more effective now!) Be worth threatening him with it though, maybe...

Congrats on the new bairn though - little bit of nice news for the day at least!

I think I'm probably the worst affected, as his main living area is directly above my flat. Maybe the person above him also suffers from the noise, but I don't know. I should probably have been keeping a record for months of the disturbances, but never got around to it. I do have a mental tally of a few more notable incidents if Landlord wants a few specifics, though. He did actually come down to apologise this evening, which is a turn up for the books - I've gone up there to complain in the middle of the night before, and he always pretended it hadn't happened afterward. But then again, last time there was a disturbance - when he brought home a few drunken friends who had a brawl on the doorstep - I threatened to call the police. So maybe he's a little wary of me now! Hopefully he really will stick to his promise to keep the noise down in future.

Arrgh, he sounds so awful!

And good luck with your interview. I hope that tapioca doesn't have too much effect.

All my cousins are female--maybe we stole the girls from you?

He really is awful - he's in his late 40s, but one of those short, greasy, teddy-boy types who still thinks he's a 20-something stud. Ick.

Not sure how the interview went. I'm not hopeful, because I've had too many in the past. But I do have another lined up, so hopefully will be a little more awake for that one.

The way my family divides is rather weird. We have a batch of older cousins, aged 20-40, who are predominantly female, although the spread is a little more even. And then there's a jump down to the 12-and-unders, who are almost all boys. It's really weird to look at some branches of the family, though, who are all boys, and wonder what happened to that 50-50 thing. It does seem that certain lines are predisposed to the y-chromosome!

Yeah, I should have. But he seems to have got the message this time, as he did come down to apologise this evening, which is a first. Maybe I was a little more wrathful than I realised at 3am!

ROFL I think wrathful was the way to go anyway! *g* Although even with a complaint, I doubt that it'll help much. Rude people like that forget about the whole thing just as fast as you file a complaint. I really hope that the thing with the housing association works out for you! :)

I was, shall we say, rather severely pissed off. Especially since I had to bang so loudly on his door so many times before he opened it. And because it was 3am.

I've heard from the housing association - they've put me on their waiting list for a two-bedroom accommodation, which is excellent. But I doubt I'm a priority, and have no idea how long the wait will be. Plus, they say pets aren't allowed in flats or maisonettes, which annoyed me, because the application form specifically asks about pets! So unless they offer me a two-bedroom house (or I lie about the cat) I won't be able to take a flat even if they offer it to me. Grr. We shall see what comes. Maybe I will get a really good job and rent my parents' old house. Or maybe I will be stuck here forever...

From: [identity profile] galathea-snb.livejournal.com
Nah, you won't be stuck there forever, you're just going through a bad phase. I am optimistic for you! *hugs* If they offer a flat to you, maybe you can work the thing with pets out nonetheless. I doubt you'll be the first one with that problem to come up, especially if you mentioned it in your application already.

We'll see. My friend has a maisonette with Hafod Housing, and she's got a cat! It is possible she just never told them about it, though...*G*

I'm sorry you have a horrible neighbor and an absent and slower-than-molasses landlord. How frustrating. He needs to fix that security light, appealing to his sense of self-preservation might do something ... I'm sure he doesn't want to be staring at legal documents if (God forbid *knocks on wood a million times*) something terrible were to happen as a result of his negligence.

Good luck with your interview!

O.o Busy family. ;)

Busy family. ;)

Big family, is what it is! Very, very big and sprawling. And prolific.

In fairness to my landlord, I had only previously told him about two of the four maintenance issues in my letter, and those verbally. But he hasn't ever done anything about them, and he knows I was really freaked out by the prowler back in the spring. So I decided to put it all in writing this time, so there would be a record! Heh, I did actually threaten him with legal action once upon a time, many years ago, when the fire alarm was out of action for about six months. I wrote to complain and said that if the house burned down and I survived I would sue him for every penny he had for being in breach of health and safety regulations...he's been nice as pie to me ever since! But this past year since he's no longer been living locally, things have been slipping again.

Really, I need to move out. But that means finding a job, and although I've had loads and loads of interviews since the redundancy, and they all tell me how much they liked me and how appointable I am, no one has actually made me an offer yet. Gah. Someday, my luck will change...

I'm glad Him Upstairs has apologised, but since you can't rely on him behaving properly in future it's probably just as well you've sent the letter.

Fingers crossed that the right job comes up.

Yeah, that's what I thought - better to have the complaint noted than not.

And cheers.

See you later!

Good luck too for getting your landlord to do the repairs and the noisy neighbour to be more considerate!

Congrats to your cousin. :)
