Have actually written some fic. All blame for this is attached to [livejournal.com profile] joe_sweden, who nagged me until I caved and started writing.

This is a Doctor Who/Rome crossover. Have never written for either fandom before, so I hope the characters read okay. The perspective is from the Doctor Who characters; no knowledge of Rome is required before reading this story.

Disclaimer: Not a single one of these characters or scenarios belongs to me, alas. This story slots in between The Doctor Dances and Boomtown in season one of Doctor Who, and during the Rome season one episode Utica. A chunk of dialogue during the dinner scene is drawn directly from the transcript of Utica, with apologies to the writers and programme makers for taking such liberties with their work.

This is for [livejournal.com profile] joe_sweden, because she told me to do it and then for some reason I did. The prompt was: 'write a fic about the Doctor, Jack and Rose meeting Julius Caesar and being invited to dinner (courtesy of some psychic paper shenanigans) with him and Brutus. Bonus points if you get an "et tu Brute" joke in there.' This is probably not quite what she had in mind…

Hope no one's expecting much in the way of plot out of this one, beyond the Who basics of 'land, poke around a bit, and then leave again'.

Brilliant fic, Jo! I can tell you have a love of history from the detail in the story.
I really enjoyed reading it and the Dr Who characterisation was perfect!

Thanks, Judy! Because it's a show crossover, most of the detail comes from the show's version of ancient Rome rather than my personal knowledge of the period, but I allowed the two to mingle a little where I knew the show had fudged a bit. *G* And if it reads okay to you, having not watched Rome at all, I must have done something right!

Thanks for commenting. :)

I LOVE this! It's AMAZING. I laughed so much.

I love how you got the Who characters so perfect, while making the others seem so believable too. I liked how unplotty it was, how we get to know the characters better and explore Rome through their eyes.

The dialouge was wonderful: so sparkly and full of life. I really liked Octavian and Rose's discovery of who he was. The Jack / Mark Antony moment was genius!

REALLY wonderful fic. :)

Thank you, Ros! *big hugs*

Since I borrowed all the Rome characters, too (including a chunk of their dialogue over dinner) I can't take any credit for them, but I'm very glad I captured them well enough for you to enjoy :) Mark Antony wasn't in the episode of Rome I used for this fic, but I couldn't resist having him and Jack come face-to-face, both of them such amazingly larger-than-life, charismatic characters.

Thanks for reading and commenting :)

Brilliant! I'm more a fan of Rome than I am up-to-date on current Whodom, but I still have to give you my kudos for a job well done! Your historical/show characters were wonderfully done and Jack had such fun, didn't he?

Hi. Thanks for reading and for taking the time to comment. I'm really glad you like the story :)

I had to watch numerous episodes of both shows as research for this story...such a hardship, I'm sure you can imagine! *G*

Where the other bloke had been nothing so much as a glare on legs, this one was kind of ruggedly thuggish and stood with his arms folded across his chest, knife hanging very visibly from his belt, watching the three of them – but Jack in particular – with the kind of mild disinterest that threatened to become outright menace if they so much as breathed wrong.

Oh, I can definitely tell EXACTLY who you're describing here. Excellent.

Terrific story! Great crossover too - that's the fun thing with DW, you can put a story anywhere.

Yay! I didn't want to force the story by naming every character that drifted into the path of the Tardis trio, and besides, it was fun for me to throw a few in that weren't named, in such a way that it wouldn't matter to anyone unfamiliar with the Rome universe, but that anyone who does know the show might be able to recognise them. I'm glad it worked!

Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment :)
