Took Small to the footy at the Millennium Stadium this afternoon, Wales vs Finland.

We lost, of course, 2-0, although the game was tighter than the scoreline suggests and pretty entertaining to watch. Finland are a strong side - they were content to sit back and defend in numbers all they way through, letting Wales run around doing all the work without actually achieving anything, then hit them on the break. First goal was just before half time and the second in stoppage time at the very end of the game, just to add insult to injury.

Small and I had great fun, though. We were expecting to be chilly, as there can be quite a draught in the stadium (plus there had been driving sleet earlier in the day) but in fact we were bathed in late afternoon sun and absolutely roasted. The ref fell over his own feet at one point, which was all kinds of entertaining, and there were other moments of great amusement, as well. Small thought it was the funniest game she'd ever been to. I've been taking her to Wales' home games for years now, but when she was younger it was mostly the atmosphere and experience she enjoyed, while not having a clue what was going on down on the pitch. These days, though, she follows the games avidly and offers critical analysis of the play and tactics!

So, another loss, and our chances of qualification for the World Cup already look pretty much dead and buried. But we've never expected to qualify, always just enjoy the qualifying campaign for its own sake. It's the taking part that counts, and this game was great fun. :)

Germany on Wednesday. I dread to think what that scoreline will look like!

Took Small to see the international at the Millennium Stadium tonight. Not, of course, that this will even remotely mean anything to roughly 99% of my f-list. It was the first home game of the World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign, and it was a decent, entertaining match.

Wales dominated possession, and really should have taken an early lead, but looked vulnerable on the break. The first goal didn't come until just before half time, after half a dozen good chances had been wasted. Craig Bellamy was probably the biggest offender - just back from injury, he worked hard and hustled brilliantly, but that final touch was woeful every time. He even missed a penalty right on half time.

Second half saw plenty of open, fluid play, but still that final touch wasn't there. Wales finally doubled their lead with a header from a corner ten minutes before time - massive deflection; keeper never stood a chance.

Final score 2-0. Respectable enough, and a decent start to the campaign, although the winning margin could and should have been a lot higher. And Small had a blast - I've been taking her to the football internationals for years now, and she has always loved it, the atmosphere and excitement of a live game. We didn't get to any games last season, though, for one reason and another, so it felt good to get back out there again! Especially since, as mentioned in my last post, it has been rather an unsettled and disruptive last couple of days.

Overall, it was a good night - fantastic atmosphere, as usual, and an entertaining game. Would be quite happy if they stopped selling those wretched hooters that the kids blast away on throughout, though!

Lots and lots of woohoos for Argentina's hugely impressive win over Serbia-Montenegro yesterday, 6-0 with Crespo scoring one and assisting a couple more.

Have got Small staying over for the weekend again, so today has revolved around her so far - this morning we went to the park to play tennis, and we've just got home from town where we accomplished the important task of purchasing Father's Day gifts for tomorrow.

Now relaxing in front of the Portugal game while she plays outside for a bit...
