Tredegar House
Sep. 5th, 2014 09:39 pmThe thousands of extra police have evaporated, the Chinooks have stopped buzzing us (seriously, a couple were practically skimming our chimney pots in work this afternoon), the no-fly zone has been lifted, the dignitaries and world leaders have gone home, the NATO conference is over and hopefully the disruption soon will be also, and it occurs to me that I never did finish posting holiday photos, so here's a few more.
This is Tredegar House, a 17th century mansion on the outskirts of Newport.

Well, most of it is 17th century, anyway. The oldest wing of the house is Tudor - rather sweetly, the guides hand out torches to visitors going into the oldest viewable room because it's so dark in there! Said oldest room, 15th century, is a gentleman's closet, where he'd have kept his important papers and booze, and hidden from the womenfolk, and whatnot.
It's a lovely house - I mean, heck, even the stables look like this:

I was not expecting to find this in the stables:

Them darn Daleks get everywhere! The house has, of course, been a filming location for Doctor Who on many occasions (where in South Wales hasn't been?)
I thought the token horses in the stables were rather cute (also, the cleanest stables I have ever seen; hobby horses leave no mess):

The house was in the hands of the Morgan family for around 500 years, but when the last Morgan died in 1951 it was completely stripped to pay off debts and death duties. The house was then used as a Catholic convent school for 20 years, and I've got to say, those girls were not gentle with the fixtures and fittings - some of the damage from those years is still plainly visible. In 1974, Newport City Council acquired the house; restoration has been an ongoing process ever since, aided and abetted by National Trust sponsorship since 2011. The restored rooms are now back to their grandest although there's still along way to go:
That last image there is the pastry kitchen - a whole kitchen, bigger than my sitting room, just for making pastries and desserts!
You have to pay to look around the house, but the grounds are freely open to the public as parkland and are lovely.

All in all, a lovely place to visit. Also, I bought a very pretty new bag in the shop - gotta love a little gift shop!

Date: 2014-09-06 07:48 am (UTC)It's a beautiful house. In the second image of the interior, you are allowed to lie down on that gorgeous red day bed to gaze up at the fresco on the ceiling!
