Hinterland, Midsomer Murders, and now George Gently is back for a new run. My 2014 viewing so far seems to be all about the home-grown detective dramas. Plus The Musketeers. Which so far is pretty much a 17th century cop show...

How is it that I've managed to be out of the country when finally - finally - there's some good telly? I fancied Hinterland for ages, and then left the week after it started, and now I'm missing the new George Gentlys and what looks to be a fun Three Musketeers - gargh! My only consolation is that I've been introduced to The Almighty Johnsons, about four brothers who are Norse gods in New Zealand... *g* Oh, and I did manage to see the Doctor Whos and the Sherlocks, though I had to wait for the latter... I dunno - my timing!

I know, right - no good telly for ages and then all the good shows come at once! When do you get back to the UK? Hinterland is going to be aired on BBC4 sometime later this year - it was only available on BBC Wales (and iPlayer) for this run.

I've recorded 'em all - if all else fails, I can copy the George Gentlys onto disc for you when you get back :)

Has the current series of Hinterland finished now? I've been back and forth so much of late that I've missed at least one double episode, and I can't find any on iPlayer. I thought I was searching BBC Wales, but of course it could have been BBC1 Restofthecountry... I find iPlayer can be very fickle like that.

Did you see the latest series of The Bridge? Cracking stuff!

Oops, sorry - I meant to reply to this ages ago and then forgot that I hadn't. Yes, Hinterland only ran for four weeks and was then available on iPlayer, but I don't know how long it was up for as a full series. They are meant to be showing the full run again on BBC4 later in the year though.

Thanks Jo. I hope they don't 'dumb it down' and show the next run in English alone. I have no problems with subtitles, and in an area where Welsh is predominant it would seem odd to hear only English spoken. I read somewhere that they'd recorded two versions - I can't help but feel that may have been a mistake.

Yes, two versions were recorded and that was always the plan. In the S4C version nothing but Welsh was spoken. For the BBC version, Mathias (and only Mathias) became an English speaker, so everyone else speaks English to him and Welsh to each other, which I thought worked perfectly as a reflection of that kind of bilingual community - we see it often enough even here in Cardiff where Welsh speakers will speak Welsh to each other and then switch back and fore to English in the presence of English speakers. I can't imagine they would change that pattern for another series when it worked so well here. :)

When I read that two versions had been made I assumed the other one was entirely in English, which would have been a great shame. Having one non-Welsh speaker amongst a whole cast of 'natives' is pretty much what one would expect for a Welsh or bilingual community and I thought the whole set-up worked extremely well. I'm really glad they didn't record an English-only version. After all, if BBC4 viewers can cope with Norwegian, Danish and Swedish, a bit of Welsh shouldn't faze us!

*Waits impatiently for Y Gwyll* :)

Ah, Y Gwyll already aired on S4C last year - having seen Hinterland, I'm sorry now that I didn't watch Y Gwyll first to judge the similarities and differences for myself. I've read a bunch of interviews with cast members who say that there are subtle differences in a number of scenes just because of the difference between English and Welsh, lines and meanings that can't be directly translated.
