So I caught the first episode of the Beeb's new Sunday night drama, The Musketeers, last night.

I liked it. It was fun. I'm far enough removed from reading any Dumas that I don't care how faithful it is or isn't to the original source material - I actually found my childhood memories of Dogtanian and the Three Muskahounds to be more distracting! I just watched wanting to be entertained and I was. 'Nuff said.

Just watched a clip - how is that I left the UK for three months when all the good telly was on?! I mean...! That looks like fun, I shall watch out for the dvds... *g*

Yes I watched it too and was (mostly) highly entertained :) It looked nice, anyhow. I think I could easily get tired of modern bloke speak in the script but the leads were all very watchable and seemed to have a nice dynamic. Hee, and Peter Capaldi was perfect as Richelieu!

It seems to be the current 'thing' that any costume drama that isn't a straight book adaptation (this is inspired by rather than adapted from) allows itself modern-sounding dialogue to make the characters seem witty and engaging or whatever. It's a bit of a cheat, as it's perfectly possible to write witty dialogue that also sounds in-keeping with the period, but I can forgive it if everything else is good. And so far so good - like you say, everyone was watchable and had a nice dynamic. It was entertaining, and that was all I asked of it!
