So that was Christmas. I think I'd have enjoyed it more only I've had the most awful cold, which seems to have been hanging around for weeks now, complete with a horrible chesty cough that I just can't seem to shake. Ordinarily I'd have used the time off to try to get stuff done - I've plenty of projects to take forward, reviews and unfinished fics to write - but instead I've mostly just laid around on the sofa covered with cats watching DVDs!

Could be worse, though - on Tuesday my poor sister and brother-in-law set off at about 10.30am to drive down here to Cardiff from Maidstone but didn't actually get here until almost 3am the following morning, 16 hours later! Their car broke down and from then on it was a chapter of accidents. They had to wait hours for the AA to turn up and take a look at the car, which was pretty much dead and beyond repair, then hours again waiting for a flatbed truck to transport them the rest of the way here to Cardiff. Then the driver only took them so far before declaring that he'd completed his hours for the day, and he just dumped them and drove off! So they had to wait for another flatbed truck to arrive...and the wretched thing went and broke down on them! The third truck finally got them here just before 3am on Christmas morning - and then they had to wait two days for all the showrooms to re-open so they could buy a new car in order to get back home again, because their old car is pretty much beyond help (it was a banger that they only paid £300 for and it would cost over £400 to fix, not worth it). Fun and games! Good to see them, though, in spite of the car chaos and the cold. They just picked up the new car today and then set off this afternoon for a 200 mile trip down to Cornwall to see Ray's family before returning to Kent, a little later than originally planned.

I saw the Doctor Who Christmas special on Christmas Day surrounded by family, which is always a mistake - my nan and great-aunt talked nonsense all the way through, very distracting. So I watched it again the following morning, alone and uninterrupted, the better to follow the plot...but didn't like it at all, I'm afraid. I did start to write out all the reasons why, in hopes it might make me feel better about it, but instead I ended up with a pages long rant and could have continued, so suffice it to say that I did not like the episode at all and can only hope that the writing improves for the incoming Doctor in his new season. But under the current regime, I'm not too optimistic.

So I went away and watched the whole of the Black Guardian trilogy to get the taste out of my mouth. Followed by The Chase, because adorable Team TARDIS is adorable and the First Doctor saying goodbye to Ian and Barbara breaks my heart in all the right ways. Now that's proper Doctor Who.

Now if only I could just shake off this cold and this cough before I go back to work next Thursday, all would be well!

Oh my goodness, poor Deb!

Dr Who... I was a tad underwhelmed at first but having watched it again I've picked up on things that I missed at first. I've decided it's not a 'meh' as I first thought, and I'll reserve any more judgement until the next season starts.

I understand completely about people talking nonsense through things! I feel like that every time I pick up a book, and someone wants to talk about something that really doesn't matter at all, and could wait until tomorrow!

There are worse things than watching dvds while covered with cats ;)

I feel for your sister and the car chaos - I had a similar issue with mine in November (and eventually ended up with a new one) although fortunately I wasn't that far from home and Adrian came to rescue me. But the feeling of being stranded at the roadside, even if someone is coming, is no fun at all!

And of course your cold will be better in time for you to go back to work - that's called Murphy's Law...

I've been stuck with an awful cough as well. It kinda decided to stay and get comfy, even though all the other flu symptoms already packed their things and said their goodbyes. /sigh So, I feel your pain. On the other hand, I watched 3 seasons of The Good Wife in a matter of a week or so, because I laid around on my couch, being sick - just without the cats covering me. LOL

Man, Deb and Ray seem to be dogged by bad luck. They can't seem to catch a break. :(

Well, you know my opinion on the Who special. Seems we both are stuck with incompetent showrunners for our favourite shows, who don't seem to care about continuity or character consistency or emotional depth. /sigh

MAN. Hope your cough goes away soon! *cuddles*

And man, seems like this Christmas was just a festival of delays and people not being able to get places. I count my blessings I managed to get the met across town!

And yeah, Doctor Who. Feh. I can't say I was a fan of most of it either, but, I dunno, at this point I've kind of stopped getting my hopes up. If something awesome emerges, it's a pleasant surprise ;) Here's hoping for a little less feh the next time round, yeah?
