Fun and games at work today. Some students hacked into the system overnight and force-changed all the passwords - staff and students. That's about 26,000 accounts rended inaccessible. Help desk are going nuts. They have to fix every single account manually, individually. All because some bored little IT geek thought it would be fun to test his hacking skills against our systems. Major business continuity incident, ahoy.

Also this morning, some of our chaps arrived in work to find that the ceiling in their office had collapsed. They are up in the attic and it looks like a chunk of masonry has fallen away from the inside of the roof and gone straight through the false ceiling onto the desks below, right on top of someone's PC - thank goodness they weren't there at the time! But it didn't occur to the idiots to vacate the office. They had the light on right next to this gaping hole in the ceiling, heedless of possible damage to the wiring, they kept slamming the door and bringing more dust and rubble down with the vibrations - this is an old building, so there could be asbestos in that dust! Very intelligent guys, but no brains. We've cleared them all out now.

And all this before 9.30am! And the kitchen is still out of use, so no soothing cups of tea, even!

Let's hope nothing else happens this week...

Edit: spoke too soon. We had a delivery of new furniture for the common room just before lunch, and the delivery truck managed to demolish half the front wall! Fingers and toes crossed that's the last disaster of the day.

Me too - these hackers don't care how much damage they cause, they only care about proving they can do something.

On the bright side, the bloke who kept breaking into our offices is in court the day after tomorrow - he cut his arm last time he got in and dripped blood all over the scene, so the police made a DNA match almost immediately. He's still pleading not guilty, though, even though they've got him bang to rights. He's claiming the police planted his DNA at the scene! What a wanker!

Oh my - I'm guessing there'll be enough work missed that the Uni'll go after the hackers (it sounds like they already know something about them, though? Were the definitely students?) Sounds like alot more than just someone being bored, surely...

And the sky is falling in too - eeep!

I don't think they really know anything for sure, but last I heard they thought it was a student. The focus right now is on damage limitation, repairing as many accounts as possible as fast as possible. Luckily it's the holidays, so a lot of students are away, which means the recovery can be staggered a bit. Nightmare!

Heck, what a mess, every which way. You need the tea, all of you. And the gin.

Just had a lovely little rallying email through from the senior manager on site today, which ended 'thanks to everyone in [our dept] for manning the hosepipes on a burning deck'!

Good grief! Makes me realize things have finally quieted down around here (knock on wood) - Last year it seems like we spent half the summer out on the curb... Fire alarm going off every week, major basement flood, 2-day server crash, blackouts...

You couldn't make it up! And just before exams, too. Ouch.

Sounds like a bad week - just as well it's a short one. I do hope the hackers get caught and severely punished - they're not clever, just malicious vandals. :(

Urgh, what a little ass. And what a bad week - quite a bit of destruction for one week. Hopefully they'll be no more of it!
