llywela: Life on Mars - Chris reading (LoM-reading)

My birthday present just arrived, two days early - a shiny new Kindle plus pretty purple case! I just wasted far more work time than I'd like my boss to know about, getting it set-up and downloading a bit of content - hooray for free e-books!

I love books, real books, and wouldn't part with my library for all the tea in China. But the Kindle is so light and practical - you can just slide it in a handbag for reading on the bus or whatever, so much easier than carting a hefty tome around. I love it. Thank you very much to my lovely family for the money they have yet to give me toward it!

Oh lovely, Jo. I adore and wouldn't give up my books either but my e-reader is loaded with fanfic and so easy to take with me for those boring bus journeys :)

I can see me having to invest a bit of time getting some of my favourite fanfics organised and uploaded, too!

Happy birthday, you!

Though I'm glad to hear you'll still be buying paper books too - I fear for their existence!

Oh, I could never give up on real books - well, you've seen my bookshelves! But it's so nice to have something that slides into a handbag for bus journeys, as well as something to curl up in an armchair or relax in a hot bath with!

Playing catch-up here by starting at most recent and heading backwards. I've sent you an e-card from Jacquie Lawson, so don't forget to check your email on Friday :)

Enjoy your Kindle. I've got a much older reader with far more primitive 'features', but the same things apply where ease of carrying is concerned. So much lighter than a real book, and holds so much more! They really are fantastic inventions :)

Thank you in advance for the card!

I'm very happy with my Kindle - it's only the basic version, none of that extravagent 3G business, but it's all I need. I had a huge rigmarole getting it set up initially, because you have to have wi-fi to get it started in the first instance but I couldn't hook into the Uni wi fi without registering the device, which required access to the settings that I couldn't do without the wi fi for initial set up! But we got it sorted in the end, which was good since I don't have wi fi at home. Or rather, I didn't have wi fi at home - my brother brought round his old wireless router last night and set that up for me, which is very cool. It doesn't have a strong enough signal for a laptop or anything like that, but it's enough for the Kindle! Perfect.

So now I can just sit back and enjoy my lightweight reading...:)

I don't have wi-fi here either, so my much older secondhand eReader is fine for me. It doesn't have any sort of connection to the Internet; everything sits on an SD memory card. I love it, because I can download to my computer and then simply transfer to the card.

But aren't they wonderful things! All those books and documents on something thinner than the average paperback!

I was all set to do all the file transfers via usb port, not anticipating the gift of the second hand wireless router. But a wireless connection was absolutely essential for the initial set-up of the Kindle; it was the first thing it asked for when I turned it on. Once that hurdle was crossed, though, it was all system's go!

And it fits so nicely in my handbag. :)
