Well, that was quicker than I thought it would be! I was picturing days before the brother and I could even get our diaries synced enough for any diagnostics, never mind acquiring replacement parts and whatnot - that's how these things usually go, anyway. But then it turned out Brother Mine was off work today, I had an unexpected evening in, and he had a spare power supply unit stashed away someplace. So he came, he diagnosed, he repaired, the PC now works again, and we've spent the rest of the evening watching a few episodes of the 1984 TV show The Tripods. Awesome.

Oh wow, and phew! Having just had to replace my laptop, I'm glad you didn't have such a poorly computer, and that it was so easily fixable. Yeay brothers! *g*
