Aww, sad news: Chelsea's little African pygmy hedgehog, Woody, died this afternoon. Cause of death unknown - he was fairly young and had seemed perfectly healthy, but was notoriously curmudgeonly, having been mistreated by his original owners so that it was impossible to socialise him properly. Poor little thing.

RIP, Woody.

Yeah, he was a sweet little thing. Not the most lovable of pets, given how much he disliked people, but sweet. At least he had a good year and a half of being well cared for, after the neglect of his early life, poor thing.

Please tell me sometimes things go right for Chelsea? Poor Woody and poor Chelsea. Hope she's not too upset.

Chel certainly isn't having an easy time of it lately, that's for sure! She isn't as upset about Woody as she was when she lost her hamster, though - poor thing, he just wasn't a terribly lovable pet, due to the neglect he suffered early in life. Chel's biggest concern was that she hadn't done anything wrong in caring for him, which she hadn't - it was just one of those things. She came to me for the evening as a treat and is now pondering whether she might be able to talk the parents into a hamster or guinea pig by way of replacement...

She was a bit upset - had a long cuddle with him (wearing thick leather gloves!) and a bit of a weep, but he wasn't the most lovable pet ever, bless him, due to the damage caused by his early neglect, so it isn't as severe a loss as when her hamster died. Poor dab, she isn't having an easy time of it lately, though, that's for sure!

Aw, poor boy. I hope Chelsea isn't too upset.

I remember when you guys took on Woody--he'd clearly been kept in such awful circumstances and I'm sure he had a much, much happier time when he was with you.

What I've learned from working in an animal shelter is that neglected or mistreated animals often have physical problems that cannot be detected due to their bad start in life. It's a shame when it happens though.

He looks very cute--I'm sure he had a wonderful life with Chelsea, and I'm glad he got to have some happy times. ♥

Thanks for telling us that, Ros - it's reassuring! Woody was such a worry from the start, especially as we didn't really know what we were taking on until he was already with us, so there was a lot of frantic research into how to care for his species! He wasn't easy to look after or love, that's for sure, but he was well cared for and even if he never did learn to tolerate human company, he loved being bathed (!) and he loved running around the lawn in summer. And he quite enjoyed chasing the dog around! That's what we'll remember :)

aww, he was lovely. I could be tempted into one of those; just at the moment we're over-wintering a proper hedgehog and I'm getting way too attached :)

He was quite a sweet little thing, despite his wariness of people in general. He loved running around in the garden in the summer and also, oddly being bathed! If you do get a proper domestic African pgymy hedgehog, though, make sure to get one that's a) young enough to adjust to you, and b) properly socialised. If it clicks, hisses and jumps, it is never going to make a good pet!

Thanks. Chel is a bit upset, but not as much as when her hamster died - bless him, Woody just wasn't as lovable a pet! He died young, but he'd had a decent life, and that's what counts.

Wasn't he sweet! In appearance, at least. Personality-wise, he wasn't so lovable, being a rescue animal who'd been neglected in early life and never fully recovered. But he had a good year-and-a-half after his rescue, and I suppose that's what counts.

Yeah, poor little thing - sometimes there's just nothing you can do for an animal. He was perfectly fine, and then he was dead, no warning at all. At least he had a pretty good life beforehand, though.
