1. Since the weather started to turn, Macavity the Mystery Cat has taken to sleeping in my kitchen.

Yes, I know I shouldn't really let him sleep on the work surface like that, but I don't have the heart to chase him down when he has clearly been chased out of too many houses already and it has taken over a year to get him feeling secure enough not to run away from me as it is. If he feels comfortable enough to take refuge in my kitchen when it is cold and wet but doesn't want to overstep his welcome by venturing further into the house, then so be it. I just want him to feel safe and to know that he will always find a good meal waiting when he chooses to visit.

2. Hooray for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi!

3. Some rather dark and slightly blurry pics of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill switching on the Christmas lights in town last week.

4. A new series of Garrow's Law started last night on the BBC, slotting neatly into the 9pm timeslot vacated by Downton Abbey last week. I find myself rather intrigued to find that full court transcripts from the Old Bailey are available online, covering the period from 1674 right through to 1913 - most of the cases highlighted in Garrow's Law, a legal drama inspired by the life of the pioneering 18th century barrister William Garrow (it was Garrow who introduced the phrase 'innocent until proven guilty'), are based on these transcripts. Some of them make for quite fascinating reading!

Well, they aren't thrilled, but neither are they actively annoyed. Poppy refuses to eat in the kitchen if Macavity is in there, but that is easily resolved by taking her bowl into another room, which she is quite happy with. For the most part, they are willing to tolerate him and he is willing to tolerate them, which is about as much as anyone can hope for with adult cats! The important thing is that none of them are the slightest bit aggressive toward one another and aren't afraid of each other.

Now I just need to get Macavity comfortable enough to let me get some flea and worming drops onto him, and all will be good...

Fancy allowing a cat on the worktop!
But he looks so relaxed and comfortable... no, I wouldn't have the heart to move him, either :)

I do keep telling him he would be more comfortable on the sofa, but he clearly doesn't want to venture beyond the kitchen just at present. Ah well. It is easy enough to wash the worktops every morning and a small price to pay for knowing that a cold, hungry stray cat feels secure of his warm welcome in at least one house. He lets me pet him now, which is a huge step forward, but he still isn't entirely confident around even me, never mind anyone else.

Aw, Macavity looks sweet! My parents always let their cats sleep on the counter-tops, which I think is a bit much, but they do look so cute it's hard to move them. I'm glad Macavity is out of the cold!

Heh, I'd rather he slept on the sofa and I'm sure he would be comfortable there, but I don't want to scare him away so I'm willing to tolerate his sleeping on the worktop instead! I'm just glad he knows he can come to me for refuge when he is cold. :)

Aww, bless you for letting him stay!

A couple of weeks ago, the two stray white cats that I've been feeding for years now suddenly vanished. I'm pretty upset about it, and I have no idea what's happened to them. If any of the neighbours know, they're not saying...

My three are all okay so far, thank goodness. But I do worry about Pablo and Billy - they've always gone out at will and keeping them in would be impossible now...

I can't turn away a stray cat in need, and he's a nice little thing, ever so well behaved. I can't help but remember my sister's horror story - she had a stray cat that she was feeding, but one day he turned up with a collar on so she got worried that he had an owner who wouldn't want someone else encouraging him to stay with them, so changed the cat flap so he couldn't get in. A few months later she found him on her doorstep half dead from malnutrition - he was in such a bad way that he had to be put to sleep. My sister was devastated. So I'm not taking any chances with Macavity! If he was aggressive toward my own cats it might be different, but he isn't, he's a sweetheart. So I'm encouraging him - he needs to know he has a refuge in case of need. :)

I hope your missing strays turn up safely!

Awww, he's adorable, although perhaps it'd be a good idea to at least move the cutting board, lol? That's awesome he let's you pet him, hope you can get some flea and worm drops on him though. Lol, look at you and your family taking in "strays" and beings needing love and care all over the place, human and feline! :)

And ooh thanks for the DW pics, gah so jealous! :p. I wish there was something like that near me each year that brought such big TV figures from my favorite shows in person...Merlin last year, DW this year! I wonder who it will be next year...

Easy enough to wash everything down afterward!

Heh, Arthur Darvill mentioned that he'd been in to see the Cheese Festival at the castle - our timing was lousy there, we might have seen him *G*

yay Macavity! My sister lost her beloved cat this weekend so we're all feeling particularly indulgent and let-all -the-cats-do-as-they-please. And my feisty little madam doesn't appreciate her namesake being released by the military junta at all, can't think why LOL

Aww, I'm sorry to hear of your sister's loss = it hurts so much to lose a beloved pet.

Macavity reminds me so much of Pixie (Dixie's sister). They do like to be up high too.

A former neighbour's daughter has just given birth to a baby girl. It is going to be interesting how their cat Marvin (the Martian) is going to react to no longer be the only child in the house. Fun times ahead and next year, when mum goes back to work, the grandparents are going to be baby sitters 3 days a week. Our Lemon Tree neighbours look after their 'great' grandson a few days a week too.

Cats can be quite jealous creatures! They generally adjust after a while, though.

Aw kitty cat! Wouldn't be able to move him either ;) He's adorable, the poor little guy. It's nice you and the gang allow him shelter and a meal... even if the catty gang aren't overly thrilled.

Thanks for sharing the pics! :D You get such awesome things happening around your area.

He ventured beyond the kitchen this morning - as far as the hallway, sat there for a while as if he wasn't sure what to do next, and then retreated back into the kitchen again!

This reticence is funny, though, because I know damn well that he was sleeping on the sofa last winter, even though he was very careful about not being caught at it...

awww cute cat!
Well.. in stead of chasing him down, you could just lovingly lift him up and give him a place elsewhere, then you tell him that he shouldn't be there, but it very welcome everywhere else ;)

It's an idea! But I'm not sure he'd tolerate being lifted - he's still very timid. It's taken me over a year to get him to a point where he will stay in the room with me and let me touch him, even, I don't want to scare him away. But we are making progress! The other day he ventured beyond the kitchen into the hallway - only to sit around looking unsure what to do next and then retreat again. But then today I got home and found him asleep on the sofa in the back room - and, more importantly, he didn't run away in panic upon being caught on the furniture. So he is gaining confidence, and the other cats are getting more used to him being around. So it's all good - small steps!
