We managed a service at the chapel yesterday, the first since the fire two weeks ago.

There is still no heating, of course, and the electrics only work in one half of the building (the circuit damaged by the fire remains defunct), plus the smell of smoke is going to take weeks to clear completely. The area directly affected needs a lot of work still. But the cleaners have done their thing and at least made the main hall useable again. We're a ways off being fully back in action, but it felt like an important first step to at least have one small meeting again. With electric heaters on, it wasn't even as cold as I'd expected!

That's great news! Did the insurance approve the repair costs, I hope?

The insurance came through, yes - thank goodness. They arranged the specialist cleaners, and are now awaiting quotes for the rest of the work. :)

You may need to persuade the congregation that a little carefully used incense might smell nicer than smoke. It doesn't have to be frankincense, which is what is usually used in Catholic and high Anglican churces - you should be able to find something like apple, lavender or cinnamon, that might be more to your congregation's taste.

Incense? In our wee little spartan nonconformist chapel? I'm thinking they will probably just open the windows/leave the main door open whenever they are in there and let it gradually dissipate. And then when the hallway is repainted, the smell of smoke will be replaced by the smell of paint anyway...

Heh. That's why I suggested an alternative 'flavour' :)

I love your icon of Sun through Tree! It seems to express so much warmth and joy in living, the reason for many of us to keep on trudging forward and sharing the roads with fellow travelers. Oh, I can't express it properly tonight, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Hugs to the congregation, and especially to you and yours!

Thanks. I love this icon, too - loved the original image when I first found it. I've got it labelled as 'tree of life', because that's what it looks like. :)
