Many hours this weekend were spent at the new house helping Dad chop down the three foot high forest that was once a lawn. Apparently, the woman who owned the house last, aside from not paying a single bill in six years - hence the repossession - also never once set foot in the garden. Such a waste.

As the jungle was tamed, we kept unearthing remnants of the garden that once existed, before Ms Repossession took up residence and began her reign of neglect. It was a bit like a miniature version of the Lost Gardens of Heligan!

Now have massive blisters on my hands, but feel fully qualified to take up a new career in hedging and ditching.

What is up with the weather, btw? It is warmer and sunnier now, in the middle of October, than it was in the middle of August! Madness. It's all madness.

It is looking more and more certain that I will be moving into the old house once the family take up residence in the new. Just have to figure out how I'm going to swing the finance - all depends what my work situation is doing at the time. Nothing is going to happen before Christmas, certainly. Practically salivating at the thought of all that space! But I will almost certainly have to take in a lodger to cover the bills. We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, I seem to be collecting additional furniture already - all second hand, of course, but then so is practically every stick I already own. I'm not proud. I can live with eclectic.

Very tired now.

Stuff pride. I vote for comfort.

Aye, indeed. My philosophy exactly - or, rather, I vote for affordability! My parents are actually doing all this furniture collection for me. My mum's aunt is getting a new three-piece suite and is looking for some way of getting rid of the old - my mum promptly accepted it on my behalf. And my Dad found a dining suite at the tip, of all places - table and six chairs, all in absolutely perfect condition, no damage whatsoever. So he retrieved them, again on my behalf. I'm not going to complain. It all saves me money!

An old house with room to rattle around in and a lodger or two to help with the finances sounds great! And yes, eclectic is good as far as comfort is concerned.

Just the one lodger, it'll be - there's only the two decent-sized bedrooms. The third, which is only a box, will be for Small when she sleeps over - or any other visitors. There's no way I could afford to run the whole house without a lodger, though, so hopefully I'll be able to find someone I can trust and rub along with. I'm practically salivating at the though of all the storage space! The flat I'm in right now is a shoebox. And it will be so good to have a catflap for Poppy.

My furniture has always been second-hand and eclectic, so really nothing is changing at all, in that regard!

Sounds like a really exhausting job clearing the garden, but a job well done by the sounds of it.

It will be great to have more room when you move into the house, and hand-me-down furniture is the way to go. It is amazing what good stuff people don't want any more.

It is - you should see the dining suite Dad found at the dump. It is in absolutely perfect condition, other than a few scratches. Saves me having to shell out for something new.

Most of the furniture I own is second hand. It might not match, but it is comfortable, which is all I ask of it. Mum's middle stepbrother is especially generous - his in-laws regularly update their furniture, so Nigel and his wife get their off-casts, and then their stuff gets passed along the line again. I've done well out of them! *G*

The garden was back-breaking work, but it is clear now, and it should look great when it is finished.
