Watched the first part of the Beeb's new costume drama last night, their Easter Special extravaganza, The Passion, only slightly miffed that it had taken the place as the finale of Lark Rise to Candleford in the schedule.

I tend to be a little wary of 'religious' programmes, as they tend to be overdone, but this has been made as a historical drama, rather than anything religious, and it works. They've taken a little creative license with the story as told in the Gospels - padded it out a bit, explored characters only seen in the sidelines of the Bible, etc. And James Nesbitt's very Irish Pontius Pilate I found difficult to accept! But on the whole it's an excellent and sympathetic dramatisation - made by the Beeb in association with HBO, according to the titles, and set only a few decades after the end of Rome, so I was reminded strongly of Rome all the way through. They probably re-used a lot of the costumes!

Second episode is tonight, at 8.30 - just hope I get home from my Monday Kids' Club in time to see it, since it's our last club of the session so likely to run late. We run from October till Easter, so with Easter being early this year, we're finishing a little early.

Having said all that, I'm looking forward to the finale of Lark Rise to Candleford next week. It's been such a lovely, charming, heart-warming series, so it's good to hear that a second series has been comissioned.

It's been such a lovely, charming, heart-warming series, so it's good to hear that a second series has been comissioned. I really enjoyed Lark Rise thoroughly. Very quiet and un-dramatic but charming and intriguing character-wise nonetheless! Does that mean that there will be a 2nd season of Lark Rise? Same actors and context? That would be really fabulous!

Yes, second series of Lark Rise has been commissioned. There's still a ton of material from the books available for adaptation. :)

It's perfect Sunday night telly - gentle and heart-warming.

YAY! That's great news! Do we have any estimation when it will hit the screens?

Um...the press release says 'will begin filming later this year for transmission in 2009 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2008/01_january/25/lark.shtml).' So I'd guess it'll probably be on at around about the same time next year :)

I didn't realise The Passion was a 2 part thing. I'm a bit annoyed that they stopped the final Lark Rise to show it - it ruins the flow.

I'm a little miffed about Lark Rise as well, but I did enjoy the Passion, and overall can't be too cross about Lark Rise's finale getting primetime billing on Easter Sunday :)

The Passion is a four-part thing. Last night, tonight, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are the four transmission dates.
