Okay, so this is a picspam I put together for the [livejournal.com profile] scene_again community, but I'm cross-posting to my own journal for my own reference. It's just a series of pictures taken on my walk to work one morning, taken with the mobile phone, which I am still getting used to so the quality isn't the best, and on rather a murky day!

I walk a little under four miles to get to work each morning, leaving the house shortly after 8am. This is the view from my front door as I leave.

Yep, it's a building site. There used to be a little independent 24-hour garage on the site, which was dead handy if I ran out of milk of a morning. I could shuffle across the road in my slippers, and all was well. Alas, it closed down a couple of years ago, unable to compete with supermarket prices. Plans have been submitted to build an apartment block on the site. Watch this space for developments!

Three doors down from my house is the local Baptist Church.

It's a huge, rambling building - goes back a lot further than you can see here to incorporate what used to be a small school built right behind it. They have a thriving congregation, as well. So why is it that every Sunday I travel to the other side of the city to attend the little gospel hall I grew up in? Loyalty, I suppose. It certainly isn't convenience!

This being Wales, my journey to work is mostly a tour of a myriad of churches! There's a pub within stones throw of every one, as well. Maybe next time I'll photograph all the pubs, because those are hugely varied, as well. Anyway, just before I get into the city centre, I pass this church, Eglwys Dewi Sant.

I've never been inside this one, but from the outside it looks a lovely old building - older than the Baptist Church.

Then just a hundred yards away is the United Reformed Church.

The inside of this church is well known to a massive number of people because until recently it was one of the few places you could buy the parking vouchers needed to park here while you did your shopping! But now they've gone over to meters, so the vouchers are no longer needed.

Queen Street, the main shopping centre in the city, at about 8.30am, before the bustle of the day really begins.

The scaffolding you can just about make out on the right hand side is the Thistle hotel, which had a serious fire last year and has been closed ever since. It looks like the repair and restoration work is nearly finished now, though, so they should be reopening soon.

This is the view I get of Cardiff Castle as I swing past on my way to work each day.

The castle has been covered in scaffolding for about two years now while restoration work was taking place, and they only just took it down in time for Christmas. It's looking pretty good now, though.

I didn't get a brilliant view of St John's Church on this particular morning - there was some kind of advertising thingy parked right outside.

This is one I'm going to have to go back to later, with a proper camera, because it really is a gorgeous building. It was built by the Third Marquis of Bute - same guy who had the castle built as it is today, on the ruins of the old Norman site. It's an Anglican church, and he was Catholic, but he was very civic minded and felt strongly that he should provide for the Protestants in his community, as well as the Catholics. So he built this church right in the heart of the city centre, and it really is stunning - the intricate stonework on the tower is amazing. This is one of the stained glass windows.

It's just a shame the church doesn't really have enough money for proper maintenance these days - as with so many of them.

A view of the building site that is the city centre.
I really wish that I'd taken a series of pictures as this work progressed - they've knocked down an area the size of five football pitches: shops, offices, post office, library, ice rink... It's been rather incredible to watch it happen day by day as I walk to and from work, seeing all those buildings come down, and now watching the new development going up. So I'll have to start recording the progress from now on until it is complete.

Spillers Records! Bang opposite the building site in the last picture.

Apparently, this is the oldest record store in the world.

A couple of views of St Mary Street, taken from the central reservation while crossing the road.

This is the oldest part of the city centre, and I'm always amazed by the architecture of the various buildings, especially above ground level. It was all built while the city was expanding, during the height of the industrial revolution, when this was one of the biggest exporting docks in the world. There was a lot of money sloshing around, and wealthy men tended toward philanthropy, wanted their buildings to look good, as well as being functional.

Brains Brewery, as seen from across the car park at the central train station.

And just as I get to work, a couple of shots of the river, taken from the bridge. First, a view south.

And then a view north, taking in the Millennium Stadium.

And that's it. Not particularly exciting, and not the best pictures I've ever taken, but that's my journey to work each day. I'll try to get some better shots of some of the same views at a later date.

And now, just because they are so cute, some pics of Poppy and Ruby. They are growing up fast now - Poppy is seven months old and Ruby five months old. And both are full of mischief! Also taken with the camera phone, which I am still getting the hang of, so the quality isn't as good as it could be.

First, my girl, Poppy.

And then Small's girl, Ruby.

That's interesting actually. I always forget that Cardiff is quite a nice city, even though I've been there a few times! I think it's because I only ever remember the motorway journey through all the industrial bits and then my aunty and uncle just live on some housing estate on Llandaff.

Looks cool though. I should do a picture summary of my journey to work one time, just lots of photos of bored commuters stuck on a train!

LOL
"This is Bored Commuter#1. Say hello, Bored Commuter#1. And now over here, we have Bored Commuter#2. See how this one is reading a free newspaper in a desperate attempt to alleviate the boredom. And then we have Bored Commuter#3, complete with ipod..." Hee.

It can be really interesting, though, to take pictures of the same thing two days running, or in the morning and then evening, and see how different it looks depending on the available light and weather conditions at the time. And for me, there is so much building work going on locally, the landscape I walk through daily is changing all the time!
