Feels like I've barely been near the 'puter in ages - the days get so busy and crowded in the run up to Christmas!
We had our staff Christmas lunch in work yesterday. Of course, it followed the staff meeting, which always goes on forever, so it was less of a lunch and more a mid-to-late afternoon meal. Still lovely, though. We needed a good nosh, a) because it was so late by then, and b) because the meeting was mostly about how dire the funding situation is for the voluntary sector in general these days. Everyone is strapped for cash, and that includes the funders.
Have decided not to worry about funding and employment until after Christmas. There's too much other stuff going on right now!
Small is as deaf as a post at the moment, which makes life interesting. And loud. The school nurse has written to the audiologist saying she needs an urgent appointment, but their idea of an urgent appointment is three months time, which is why they never get to see her when her hearing is at its worst. She saw the paediatrician last week, and the exceptionally heavy periods she's been having were discussed. He said fibroids could be one explanation, but wants her - us - to struggle on for a few more months, because she's so very young for any kind of treatment. Have to watch that she doesn't get anaemic in the meantime, though. Poor lass.
Deb has been on the phone a bit lately, feeling quite weepy. This would have been their second Christmas with C if the adoption hadn't fallen through at the final hurdle, and she's really feeling down about it all. Plus, Ray is working long shifts so they aren't getting that much time together. Last night she phoned with news of the latest disaster - this one affecting Ray's mother, rather than them directly. Apparently, on Sunday night, a 200-year-old tree came down on Cookie's house, down in Cornwall. She lives in this little old wattle-and-daub cottage, so the damage is pretty extensive. D&R were meant to be staying with her for New Year, but goodness knows what is going to happen now.
Plus, Brother Mine has been sent for urgent blood tests, because the lymph glands on the back of his neck are badly inflamed. Hopefully it's just an infection, but he's been on antibiotic for a few days now with no improvement. It'll be a few more days before we get the results there. Fingers crossed.
In pet related news, Poppy is booked in to be spayed next Tuesday, which is also the day I finish work for Christmas. She's going to hate me for the nil-by-mouth thing! She's getting used to having Ruby's visits now. On Sunday morning Dad brought Ruby when he came to collect Small, who'd been sleeping over - the puppy chased the kitten all over the house before we managed to grab her! But Poppy wasn't at all frightened or distressed, just very affronted. *G* That's progress, I suppose!
Caught the latest Grey's Anatomy over the weekend - I think that was the last ep they've made, so there'll be no more now until the WGA strike is resolved, whenever that might be. There doesn't seem to be any end in sight right now :(
I'd predicted that Seth Green's character was toast last week, and so it proved. :( I really wanted him to pull through! But he was Lexie's lesson in getting attached to patients and then having them die on you - they've all been through it, one way or another. I liked that Cristina actually pulled her finger out and did her job as Lexie's teacher and mentor - it's way too easy to forget that the gang are residents now and responsible for their interns in exactly the same way that Bailey was responsible for them over the last three seasons. I also liked the symmetry of the dancing scene at the end, looping back to the dancing scene at the start of the first part. The fact that Cristina had brought Lexie home, the simple fact of Lexie being there, so that it wasn't just Meredith and Cristina, that was what made it possible for Izzie to get over herself and join in, with George. She's had such a bee in her bonnet about Mere and Cristina's friendship being exclusive, been so jealous of them having that. It was great to see that barrier finally breaking down. There seems to be hope for them all! Almost...
I'm still not sure what the point is of the whole Alex-Ava/Rebecca thing. And I'm very sad about Bailey's marriage :(
And then there was Cranford. Man, Miss Matty's life sucks right now! Everything seems to be going wrong for her, and she's so sweet, and doesn't deserve it. :( I really hope her luck will turn somehow next week - I want to see Martha's plan for her and Jem to get wed and help out come off. I like Jem. He reacted badly to Martha's proposal, but mostly, I think, because it came so much from left field, rather than not wanting to get married. She flummoxed him completely, presenting the idea to him, Miss Matty and Mary all at once, rather than discussing it with him. Hopefully they'll be a happy story for the final episode, after so much gloom and doom the last few weeks.
Poor Doctor Harrison! He's so utterly clueless, and fell so massively victim to the perils of gossip and scandal-mongering in a rigid society. So many hopes and good intentions blown out of proportion by well-meaning friends and relatives resulting in so much damage for so many people - and such a seemingly impossible hole to climb back out of. I hope some kind of resolution can be achieved for the doctor and Sophy, at least.
And poor little Harry, punished so heavily for the terrible crime of learning! But that storyline reveals so many intriguing paradoxes in so many characters. You've got Lady Ludlow objecting to education on class grounds versus Mr Carter whose sensibilities regarding education for all come to ground on the subject of gender. But Lady Ludlow is the one with all the power in their relationship, which allows her to enforce her will - Mr Carter can only influence her so far, and he used up all his markers last week when he persuaded her to intercede for Harry's dad.
Speaking of Harry's dad, I've had the strongest sense of 'hey, it's that bloke...' ever since I first saw him, but it's taken me until now to pin him down as Shakespeare in Doctor Who. I must be very slow - I'm sure everyone else already noticed that ages ago!
Anyway, there's loads more I could say, but I've waffled on long enough already.

Cranford is just so good. Sunday nights will not be the same again. :(
It's so lovely - I'm really going to miss it. Fingers crossed the Beeb produce more mini-series that are as good next year!
