Okay, so two out of four recaps so far this season have gone over 30 pages. That probably says something about just how much is going on in these episodes! Or maybe it just says something about how wordy I am. There seemed to be a lot of meta-worthy stuff to chew over in this one, and I found myself rambling on for an awfully long time about the power of words and the impact a single conversation can have, plus the history of Dean's solo gigs while Sam was away at university, Bobby's mini sub-plot with the Colt, Ruby's intentions, Sam's vulnerable state of mind, and goodness only knows what else - 31 pages worth of rambling! So, um. Yeah. Kind of a mini-novella again, sorry folks. And the really scary thing? If I'd let myself carry on editing and re-drafting any longer, I'd have found even more things to say, and this would be even longer still!

Date: 2007-10-30 09:58 pm (UTC)I actually jolted when that demon said that command fell to Sam once the YED was dead - I have a feeling they're definitely taking that somewhere. And, like I've wondered before, what the heck kind of power was/is Sam supposed to have, that he should be able to control an entire army of demons? It seemed like Ava had a hard time with those little wimpy ones she was controlling back in AHBL.
And I ♥ the boys' interactions this season - it's like Sam is discovering, as a man, how much fun his brother can be. It feels like he's finally shedding his role as ONLY little brother, that he can be Dean's friend and partner too, and I love watching it happen.

The impression I got from AHBL was that the chosen children each had one power that manifested at first, as we all know, but then if they genuinely gave in and unlocked their full potential, they would all have access to the same range of powers, which would then only grow in strength. Now, Sam seems to believe that because the YED is dead, that means his psychic powers are gone as well, because he has always believed his powers were linked to the YED. Whether that's true or not, I'm sure we will find out in the future! I'm enjoying the ride so much.

That's a really gorgeous way of putting it. I ♥ their relationship this season as well. Of course, it took Dean being under a death sentence for Sam to reach this stage, but there we go. It's beautiful to watch right now. That can only mean that enormous pain lies ahead...

Date: 2007-10-30 09:19 pm (UTC)I was thinking about Bobby and decided that the fact that Bobby tried to restore the Colt gives reason to think that he accepted that human sacrifices are inevitable or working on the Colt wouldn't make sense in the first place. After all they have literally nothing to defend themselves from the demons except some fallible rituals and symbols. I think that the close encounter in TM7 and Bobby's obviously fatalistic outlook on this war may have hardened his stance considerably. I still think his working with Ruby feels ooc, but well as you said, there might be story in there that we just weren't told .. yet.
When I re-watched the episode I really marvelled in how often the boys smile at each other here. Sam was indulgent with Dean before, but the comfortable and visibly affectionate behaviour Sam's towards his brother's quirks is extremely highlightened in Sin City. It's heart-warming. Which makes all this secrets and doubts between them all the more devastating. I am really afraid that this is the first season where they manage to divide and conquer the Winchester team from the inside! :(
They really ride the whole 'moral murkiness of wartime' theme heavily so far and I am terrified to think about how far they might take it. I do find it thinkable that they go to some extremes just for the shock effect alone, they did that before. It has all possibilities of awesomeness but also the possibility to be destructive to characters and show. Man, this season is heavy. /sigh
Also on re-watching I have to say how immensely I enjoyed the actress that played Casey, too bad they killed her. :D

Eh, just count how many times in the past you've been just as apprehensive about the potential for badness, only for everything to work out just beautifully in the end. Focus instead on the potential for awesomeness! There are so many amazing ways this could go - all those secrets will undoubtedly result in immense angst, but our boys have survived everything fate has thrown at them so far, and come through it all stronger than ever. Have faith in that! And in the writing team, who love the show and the boys as much as we do.

*nods* Any use of the Colt on a demon has always involved the acceptance that some human life must be sacrificed for a greater good. Human casualties are starting to mount up this season, but it's still a gradual process, with that murkiness of war being explored slowly but surely. I hope they continue to ration the use of the Colt as a last resort!
