family stuff
May. 7th, 2007 09:04 amHappy Birthday to my darling Small Sis, who is 11 today. Where the hell did all those years go?! It only seems like yesterday that Sally from Barnardos phoned my mum to say they had a new baby on the project, only 6 days old, whose parents weren't coping well and were in need of respite care. 'Just five afternoons a week for six weeks,' she said. 'Just till they get on their feet.'
Um, yeah. Eleven years later, she's still with us and ours for keeps! Funny how things turn out.
Happy Birthday also to
pixi_avatart, while I'm thinking about it - have a great day!
My Big Sis had to have her little kitten Nutmeg put to sleep yesterday. Only seven months old, but she had never been well since they had her - they've spent a small fortune having tests done to find out what was wrong. Yesterday morning Deb got home from church to find Nutmeg collapsed on the bed, which was soaked in urine. She'd had a stroke. Only seven months old. Deb rushed her to the vet, who said her test results had come in last the previous night and weren't good at all. They'd feared cat leukaemia or feline aids - it wasn't either of those, but apparently was something just as bad. I'm not sure the name of the disease, but it is highly contagious. Deb wasn't even allowed to take the body home with her to bury in the garden - the vet had to arrange to have her disposed of in a special, biological incinerator!
Ray bought that kitten for Deb as a Christmas present, because of the whole not being able to have a baby thing. So she's pretty gutted. Also, they have to disinfect the entire house and keep a very close eye on the other two cats, Lulu and Disney, and just hope to hell they don't catch it too.

Date: 2007-05-07 08:37 am (UTC)Very sad news about Nutmeg ... we lost 2 cats 2 days running ... one to feline leukemia and the other to feline aids. Lotti had Leukemia and we had to get Pixie and Dixie tested. As you know Dixie is still with us.
::: Hugs ::: too close after losing your beloved Calico.

Date: 2007-05-07 08:46 am (UTC)Yeah, we lost a couple of cats to leukaemia, years ago when we were kids. We weren't allowed to have any more pets for about six months after that, to make sure any infection in the house was completely gone.
Pets, eh.

Date: 2007-05-07 04:28 pm (UTC)I'm so, so sorry about the kitten. It's bad enough they had to lose her, but to go through all that as well... :::cries::: Sending virtural hugs to them and crossing my fingers for the remaining kitties.
