Mum just phoned. The inquest for Small's mother is on 22nd March. Sally from Barnardos is going to go - she's blocked several days in her diary for it, as the messier ones can go on for a while, and this could well be messy. So, we'll finally find out exactly what happened, at last.

Social Services are still not being helpful.

Yuck indeed. Sally is going to attend and report all the details back to us - Small indeed doesn't need to know any gory details at this stage, but it's important that we have as much information as possible kept for when she's older.

It's madness that an inquest should take almost a year - but maybe that indicates that there was a significant police investigation. Hopefully once it's all over and the details are out in the open, that can be the end of it.

Thanks, sweetie. We're all okay - just glad this will be over soon, and sad for Small that she will never get a chance to ask her mother any questions when she's older.

That has been quit a mess, but I guess her whole life was more or less a mess... :( I have thought the story of Small's mom and siblings a lot now that I study social work and read about similar situations. I'm just glad that Small is safe with your family and has a chance for a happy and stable life! Too many children don't have that...

Yup - her entire life was a mess, from early childhood. That's what's so tragic about it. She was never able to change - she never wanted to change - and it cost her her life, and her children suffer because of it.

We're just hoping there aren't too many gory details for us to hope Small never asks about.

Lucky you managed to miss all my earlier ranting on the subject. Yeah, she died in April, but we only found out in October because social services hadn't bothered to inform anyone. Her old case workers at Barnardos went mad about it. And so did we. Small had a right to be informed that her mother had died - she had a right to go to the funeral if she wanted. Also, she's old enough to pick up a newspaper, read about the inquest and recognise her mother's name, which is no way for a ten-year-old to learn news like that. As it was, we found out from one of JW's fellow drug addicts who thought Small had a right to know.

We're assuming it was drug related, but won't know for sure until the inquest. Such a waste of a young life.
