Nov. 30th, 2006 07:44 amBeautiful pink-and-orange sunrise this morning. That probably doesn't bode terribly well for the weather to come today...
It's a Pros morning - time to stop fiddling and just put some episode headers for the first season up already. Some of these I like more than others. *rolleyes* Well, some work better than others, but I can't keep playing with them forever...

And an experimental Pros wallpaper from Old Dog. Not wonderful, but I might as well post it anyway.

Date: 2006-11-30 09:34 am (UTC)When I first got into SN I was fascinated by the contrast with Pros - both very strong partnership shows, and yet so different. It's so interesting to compare different TV partnerships - always revolving around two very different personalities - and see how many different twists they can put on the basic personality concepts. Especially fascinating for me is that in Pros my favourite is Doyle, who is the more thoughtful, idealistic one, whereas in SN my favourite, as you know *G* is Dean, who in terms of 'partnership types' is the opposite role. But it is the highly unique spin each show takes on the partnership theme that decides it, I think, because no matter how alike the basic 'types', they are also also very much individuals and each unique in their own way.

Date: 2006-11-30 10:06 am (UTC)The writing did change a lot in the last 15-20 yrs, that's for sure. Seasonal arcs and character development were nearly non-existent features. At the end of an episode it was common to re-establish the status quo and there was rarely an event that had huge, life altering changes for the characters, all in all more plot driven than character dramas. Still a lot of fun to watch.
It's great that a show like Supernatural combines the virtues of the 'classics' (strong partnership, opposing personalities) with the best of present tv (arcs, in depth character development). *goes into fangirl mode* We just have the best show ever ;)

Date: 2006-11-30 10:20 am (UTC)*nods and agrees* LOL That was one of the things that hooked me so much - old-style partnership show but with continuity and development and mytharc and everything.
I don't mind the reset button being used in Pros, because it's just how things were back then. But it's interesting to look back on older shows and imagine what they'd be like if written to modern standards of continuity and development...
