Nov. 3rd, 2006 02:51 pmSince I remembered that I hadn't posted anything about it yet, and wanted to get a few thoughts down...Okay. Torchwood, episode three - I watched it a couple of days ago so am now trying madly to remember all the thoughts I had about it at the time. I suspect I will fail miserably in that!
I still can't get past the shiny of having my city on TV. I just...sit there ticking off all the places I know so well. This is such a small city, see. It's distracting! In good ways and bad ways. Like when Gwen sprints out of an arcade and straight into the train station that I know for a fact is a good 5/10 minute walk away...
Suspension of disbelief? Right. Gotcha
I'm not sure the show has quite decided what it really wants to be, yet. It's feeling its way forward, learning about itself as it goes, and we're going to have to bear with it on that. This episode felt stronger in terms of plot, although there are still loose ends. Mostly I find myself wanting more focus on who the characters are rather than in-depth plotting, though.
Jack remains highly enigmatic. He's not entirely at ease with the leadership role he finds himself in, I feel. I suspect his position at Torchwood isn't really something he planned or aspired to, just something he almost fell into. He wants to find the Doctor, to find out what's going on with him - not just can't be killed, but doesn't sleep either; he's got to be wondering who he even is now, he's been brought back to life so changed - and Earth in this period is a time the Doctor is known to favour. Why Cardiff rather than London, we can only imagine. But the point is that he's just filling in time, and I think that attitude rubs off on his underlings a bit.
Gwen is starting to annoy me a bit now. She just keeps on pressing buttons on things she knows to be alien artifacts of unknown origin and potentially dangerous! Such an idiot. But I like that her temptation is being very slowly explored - torn between the excitement and adrenaline rush offered by her new job (and Jack ) and the comfort and security of her stable, long-term relationship with Rhys. I think she needs to be careful with Jack - too easy to be drawn into something and get her fingers badly burned.
I was glad to see a bit of positive focus on Owen after he came out of the first two episodes in a not-so-shiny light. Witnessing that girl's murder, feeling her emotions - it had a profound impact on him, and I was glad to see that he cared so much and was so determined to solve the case, even after so many years had passed. Plus, he amused me immensely by so easily locating people the low-tech way, in the phone book, while Tosh was more slowly discussing the high-tech options
I want to see more of Ianto. He's cute and we've barely seen him so far!
And that's all I can remember to say for now

Date: 2006-11-03 07:24 pm (UTC)And heck yeah, if you live someplace that's filmed a lot it must be old hat. But it's so new to me, and this is such a small city, I'm finding it terribly exciting. My Small Sis was all excited just this week about bumping into Captain Jack in town! And I'm forever falling over film crews...

Why Cardiff and not London? The Tyler's would be the best spot to stake-out if you were looking for the Doctor, but they aren't in London anymore. Second best spot, Cardiff... The rift and all - The Doctor's bound to show up for recharging at some point or because there's big trouble coming through. Yeah, he saw a fair bit of London in the past two seasons but mostly because of Rose.
Of course, why the rift is in Cardiff... Well. Economics. ;-)
I'm a little uneasy at all the flirty stuff with Gwen. Not that it's Jack that's doing it - he'd flirt with anything - but that Gwen seems to be participating. I really like the emphasis they have been making on Gwen's relationship with her boyfriend and that she should savor her life, etc. This flirting stuff just confuses me and destroys all of that.
That being said... OMG how hot was that gun range scene?!? *Major* kink alert!
