Sleepy this morning.
The mystery special delivery letter I had to go all the way to the sorting office for turned out to be the footie tickets. Still no sign of the adoption reference. They aren't exactly rushing.
Deb says that Anthony and Susan had their meeting with the social worker on Tuesday. Susan has retracted all the worst things she'd originally said, but still accuses Deb of 'making no effort to repair the damage between them' (Bah. Not true. Susan is too up and down for any such attempt to work long term) and of 'looking down her nose at the way Susan runs her house and raises her children'. That one is probably true, since Susan doesn't run her house or raise her children, but expects her 13 year old to do it all for her. Anyway, the meeting has been held. No idea what the eventual outcome will be.
Small phoned me Thursday night asking to sleep over this weekend because the children down the street were being horrible again. Luckily, she'd calmed down last night and forgot to ask again - she was too busy playing with Betty from around the back instead. But apparently Thursday was a bad day. Small was playing out with Tyra, who is a year younger and who my Mum has before and after school a few days a week and has been involved with since she was tiny. The Landa children came out and, as Small said, were horrible. They called both the girls cows and a lot worse, swearing at them like troopers. They told Tyra her mother doesn't love her or she wouldn't leave her with a childminder, and the little boy kicked Small on the leg and in the privates. Horrible children.
Tyra's mother Nadia wiped the floor with them. They can't accuse her of being racist because she's Muslim. Go Nadia! Hopefully things will settle down again now, but there's no way it will last for long.
Nadia, bless her, is one of the few Barnardos mothers that has done well for herself. Back when my Mum was working with Barnardos (which is how we ended up with Small) we were involved with a lot of teenage mums, and most of them failed. But Nadia has done incredibly well. She's Muslim, but got pregnant by a white boy, and had to go into hiding and change her name - her family tracked her down three times during the pregnancy and beat her up, trying to make her lose the baby. She was 17. Nine years later, she and Tyra are doing incredibly well. My Mum used to have Tyra as a baby so Nadia could go to college, paid for by Barnardos. But now, years later, Nadia keeps Tyra with her as a private arrangement, paying for the childcare herself, so she can go to work. She's doing well. And Small and Tyra are good friends. Not sure if they know they both came from the same flats, though.
Will be out most of today. Someone at the church had this bright idea of holding a 'Fun Day' for the kids to lead into Sunday School starting back tomorrow. Personally, I can't think of many things I'd like to do less today, but I'll have to go. And then when I get home, I'll have to finish preparing the craft for my new class tomorrow. Back to the grindstone!

Date: 2006-09-09 02:47 pm (UTC)They are a nightmare. Talking to the parents doesn't help - if you complain about their children's behaviour they just hide behind their skin colour. "How racist of you to suggest that our children behave badly!"
'Tis an ongoing thorn in all our sides.
