My Mum phoned me in work today. "I'm sitting here worrying," she said. "Not seriously worrying, just minor worrying. So I thought I'd give you a ring so that you can worry, too."
Cheers, Mam.
She'd been on the phone to Aunty Lel, she said, who'd been telling her all about her newest neighbour. This new neighbour is a young woman with a little boy, very honest about her very poor background, including a spell in prison but doing well now, apart from having an abusive boyfriend. She had also told Lel that she has an older son who lives with her mother, who had taken him in while she was in prison. Her name is Mary...
Me: "That's Caz!"
Caz was one of the young mums my mother worked with for Barnardos - her little boy, Declan, was the last baby Mum looked after before Small arrived and turned our world upside down. One day, when Declan was three months old, Caz brought him to my Mum to look after for the day and then went out with her boyfriend and the baby's father, who were two different people, committed a robbery and stabbed a young girl in the process, and then came back to collect the baby asif nothing had happened. She went to prison for it, and her mother took in little Declan. Then when Caz came out of prison she did seem to have grown up a lot, and had enough sense - and love - to see that she couldn't uproot Declan now that he was so settled with his grandmother and that the best thing for him would be to leave him where he was and remain a part of his life without unsettling him by taking him away from the home he now had.
Declan's father, incidentally, later moved in with Small's birth mother - he was the guy that introduced her to heroin and prostitution.
So, Caz is now living in Lel's street. With her new little boy, thatr she's apparently doing well with, and her abusive boyfriend. Name of Anthony - very tall and thin, dark hair...
Small's birth father fits that name and description. Could be a coincidence. Must be hundreds of Anthonys in the city. But the girls that came through the Barnardos project all knew each other and remain a network of contacts. And the various men they were involved with tended to go from one to another. So it might be. It probably isn't, but it might be.
Mum has got Lel in investigative mode to try to find out more. If it is, that means we'll have to be careful about taking Small to visit Lel visibly. Last we saw of A was about four years ago when his new wife unexpectedly came and knocked on our front door, drunk as a skunk, to introduce herself - and blithely told us that they'd often sat in the pub opposite and watched the house, and thought we seemed nice...
Yeah. A minor worry. Life is full of 'em.
Cheers, Mam.

Date: 2006-07-17 06:37 pm (UTC)She has no memory of her birth father - hasn't seen him since she was a year old (apart from that incident four years ago with his new abd by now probably ex wife). She remembers more about her birth mother, because she was still having intermitten contact up to the age of three, and she has a horribly long memory.
