Have been in a bit of a Dark Angel mood, since I'm fast approaching the end of my DVD set, so took myself back into PS and played around. Experimental wallpaper below:
Net Closes In
This is based on the scene at the end of the episode Dawg Day Afternoon, when Max and Alec put their arms around Joshua and hold him as he grieves for Annie. It has been a horrific day, and the normal defences that Max and Alec usually employ to hide their feelings (bitchiness for Max and cockiness for Alec) have been completely stripped away as they can feel the net closing in on them, the witch-hunt for transgenics stepping up and taking a very dark turn. They are frightened, and have no place to turn.
Not completely happy with it, but it's better than a lot of the rubbish I try to put together!
Have decided I like the Max-Alec dynamic a lot more than the Max-Logan dynamic, and not on a shippy level. Max and Logan never seem to develop their relationship in any real way - they spend the entire two year run of the show dancing around each other, never once actually define what their relationship is. And in the second season the whole 'can't touch' virus just gets frustrating - an artificial construct to keep them dancing around each other instead of allowing them to deal with their relationship and the things that have happened to them in any more meaningful way.
Max and Alec's relationship, on the other hand, has a very clear progression which is much more satisfying to watch because the development can be mapped from episode to episode. They first meet almost as enemies, very much on opposite sides. Then they move into the realms of being acquaintances forced to work together due to first circumstances and later close proximity, and on from there to a grudging friendship of sorts. Then the episode Hello, Goodbye marks a very distinct moment when they move past 'grudging friendship' into a very genuine friendship, and not just for that episode. From that point on till the end of the series, although they continue to rag on one another, there is a very clear difference in their interations. No longer any question of loyalty - they have reached a very deep understanding of one another and, with the net closing in around them, their shared circumstances bring them closer than ever, something that no one else can share. They are completely in the same boat, and understand each other in a way that Max and Logan never really can, no matter how much they love one another and sympathise with each other's point of view.
