Haven't posted at Final Football in over a week. Not that I post there all that much anyway, only in one very long conversation that I've been having with Humbird and Bastin for about two years now. Hummie being an anglophile Chicagoan, and Bastin a blue-blooded Tory. We are an odd combination.

Bastin and I fight an awful lot. Our politics, ideology, and just about everything else, are diametrically opposed. He can be patronisingly disparaging of my nationality, which always annoys me most. He considers himself British, not English, and just doesn't understand how much my Welshness defines me. I am both Welsh and British, but in that order, and can't understand why he denies his Englishness.

So, over a week ago now, he crossed a line and seriously dissed Wales. I've not posted there since. I just couldn't be bothered getting into a deep, dark debate with him about it. I'm not usually nationalistic, but Bastin always brings it out in me somehow. It has taken the two of them until now to start wondering where I am. And now I can't decide whether to go back and start talking again or not. I miss our conversation. I miss Hummie. I even miss Bastin. But I don't want to argue any more.

This reminds me of a languages community I still belong to, but never post any more. Not since I was called 'Eurotrash' for daring to correct some US high school kid's (wrong) French and object to another US high school kids' dissing France (having never been there) in the same thread - he thought I was French.

Probably weird as I'm not even particularly pro-French, but a) fluent and b) I hate these sweeping generalisations, whether it's Wales, France or the US.

The net really does lead to some weird stuff. It's also made me realise I'll stand up for Europe as a whole, and the UK or Switzerland or anything else related to prejudices against any country if irritated enough - although when you've got a community where the majority is composed of those from across the Pond, it's not always worth it.
