the lengthiness of writing

llywelaI envy people who can knock off a lengthy fic in ten minutes flat. I really do.
Although, if it is a very short one-scene wonder, I can knock those off quickly enough, for the initial writing of it at least. Re-drafting and polishing takes longer. But what I'm talking about are long stories, of the kind I've got into with my Monico series (how did that get so...long and ongoing, anyway?) Those stories average 30-40 pages, and take forever to build. I can spend hours and hours over a period of days if not weeks, just staring at what I've already written and tweaking the odd word here and there, and come out of it with the actual story only a few lines longer. I spend far more time going over what I've already done than actually writing anything new. And with it being ongoing and episodic, with strict continuity, I find myself fighting all the time to balance ongoing themes and development with the actual subject of the current story; plotting it all out is fun...
Ai. But I must enjoy it, or why would I put myself through all that!
