Episode 12, Army of Ghosts - woohoo!

Okay, first of all - I'm feeling a lot fuzzier towards season two this last episode or so. And I have a horrible feeling it's to do with the Doctor and Rose being apart more. I like them apart. Together they are just...juvenile. And the Doctor is better than that. They are both better than that.

I would like to thank this episode and the previous one for helping me to like Rose again. This is the Rose I enjoyed so much in season one - intelligent and pro-active and Doing Stuff, and showing us how much she's learned since she's been with the Doctor, and even knowing a wee bit about the Tardis console (although not that much).

Really didn't like the opening voice-over-of-doom by Rose, though. Spoilerific much? Maybe when the two-parter is over and I know how it all works out I'll like it better.

Found great guilty amusement in the thought of Rose travelling the universe and then taking her washing home to Mum. And Jackie all over the Doctor with smooches and welcomes - how times have changed! Nine would never have stood for that. Ten doesn't seem to mind the domestic as much, taking Rose home to visit every five minutes. I appreciated Jackie's little talk with Rose about the future and how Jackie isn't always going to be there to come home to, implying that sooner or later Rose is going to have to make a decision about whether or not she really can keep up this life indefinitely. And then with the ghosts, and I really enjoyed Jackie's little dig at the Doctor about he wasn't around when they showed up so they all just had to come to terms with their presence and deal with it on their own.

Not very well, as it turns out. Loved the Doctor being properly Doctorish and busting everyone's bubble about the ghosts being their loved ones, and being so furious about the stupid apes messing with things they shouldn't be messing with and reducing it all to science and all, because that's the real Doctor, that is.

"Don't you think it's beautiful?"
"I think it's horrific."
What's dead is dead, so, given the opportunity, perhaps he wouldn't bring back the Time Lords.

Ghostbusters? Too many modern pop-culture references. The Doctor used to be remote from that sort of thing, and it suited him much better, although I loved his ghostbusting gear. But the Doctor not noticing that Jackie was still aboard when he took off, and Jackie moaning from then on about being kidnapped was fab. So was the Doctor making use of Jackie's presence by pretending that she was Rose so that the real Rose was free to snoop. Because - he trusts her to do that. After all, she saved the world just last week. So, of course, she goes and gets herself captured almost immediately. But, to be fair, so did the Doctor. And Jackie was a lot of fun, verbally sparring with the Doctor during their tour of Torchwood - I enjoy that so much more than the mutual adoration society the Doctor and Rose have got going on.

Torchwood? Tracy-Ann Oberman's Yvonne was pretty cool but I still want to know what happened to UNIT. Are they gone now? Or are Torchwood meant to have existed the whole time but in secret? UNIT blatantly worked with the Doctor for years - surely if Torchwood had been around they'd have intervened? Did the events of Tooth and Claw change the history that the Doctor had experienced? After all, there are no Time Lords around to prevent that kind of thing any more...

I want answers. I doubt I'll get them.

Liked the Doctor's little anti-gun rant - that's very him. "That makes me the better person. They can shoot me dead, but the moral high ground is mine." And then so bewildered by the applause. Not many people get a standing ovation while being taken prisoner. And then the way he jumped down the steps to sit on them - oh, I liked that. And his specs again. *G*

Really appreciated Jackie's reaction to the Doctor 'killing' the Cyber-controlled people, even though they were already dead, and even more appreciated his quiet but heartfelt apology to them beforehand. And Yvonne's disgusted reaction to the ear-pieces that go right into their brains...

So. Cybermen. Yeah. Not the best enemy ever, but I kind of appreciated the technobabble about the two dimensions colliding, and I loved the Doctor's little demonstration with the window. Plus, the concept gave us Mickey back, and I love Mickey so much this season - his character has developed the furthest out of anyone in New Who and I love that. I mean, compare this Mickey to the Mickey we first met in Rose - amazing.

"Mickey, Mickey Smith. Defending the Earth."

Plus, he managed a little dig at the Doctor when Rose said there should have been no way for him to get back. The Doctor has been wrong before - yes. Yes, he has. And I liked Mickey's attitude toward Rose - pleased to see her but not all over her, focused on the Cybermen, whereas she was gushing as usual. He really is over her - he's outgrown her and developed a whole new life of his own - a very cool new life of his own, with the Cybermen hunting and all - and I'm pleased for him.

The creepy sphere was decently done. I was glad that Rose's attempt with the psychic paper didn't work, but annoyed by it at the same time. And then...Daleks! Wahey! Mr Instructor's Daleks have put in this season's appearance at last - I've known they were coming for such a long time now!

But seriously - how many times does the Doctor have to wipe the Daleks out before it's permanent?

"A footprint doesn't look like a boot." Nice metaphor. Kind of like how the Doctor looks like a man, but really isn't.

Looking forward to the finale, and really hoping they don't screw it up.
