See, now that was Doctor Who.
Still not perfect, but then again, what is? A few Doctor-Rose moments aside, that felt like real, Old Skool Doctor Who, and how fantastic it is to have that back.
Bizarre alien planet with bizarre goings on, weird science fiction plot, fantastic sets, locations and direction combining to make it feel real and gritty and dangerous. The Doctor cut off from the Tardis. Mystery! Suspense! Guest characters with personality that you could connect to. Amazing scene seeing the body of that girl drift away into space.
Wasn't so fussed on Toby's transformation sequence - the weird tattoos he developed all over him looked too much like they'd been drawn on with felt pen. Possibly they were... The actor did a good job, though (apart from the initial transformation and collapse).
The Doctor and Rose, though. I'm still finding the dynamic not quite right. They giggle too much at inappropriate times, and the whole 'we've lost the Tardis, we're trapped...let's move in together' conversation felt forced by the writers as either a sop for fangirls or a slap in the face for die-hard traditionalists, rather than flowing naturally from the characters. Or maybe I'm just cynical. I did like the little kiss on the visor of his spacesuit as he left - that felt more natural and added to the sense of very real danger.
They really are overdoing Rose's makeup this season.
The giggly moments aside, I liked Rose again this episode - from picking up that chair to defend herself to being all compassionate about the Ood and taking their stranding in her stride instead of freaking out, she was on song - like having first season Rose back. And the Doctor was just soooo enthusiastic about the science, so interested and animated - and that's the Doctor I know and love.
Yay for the cliffhanger ending and 'to be continued' - classic Who, tune in next week for the (hopefully) exciting conclusion. *G*
