On this day in 1913, 439 people were killed after an explosion occurred in the Universal Colliery in Senghenydd, South Wales. It was the worst mining accident in UK history.
My great-grandfather Arthur was 14 years old and had just moved with his family to a village in the next valley over. They heard the explosion. Arthur and his father, George, ran over the mountain to see what had happened, if there was anything they could do. But, of course, there was nothing.
Arthur collected postcards all his life, and these two, commemorating the disaster, are among his collection.
