"Now for the punch line: everybody dies."

So, I finally got my act together and finished one of my outstanding episode recaps for Supernatural season four. It's taken long enough, no? Where did all my free time go? This one has been on the go since it first aired, at the beginning of May, and honestly, if I hadn't got it transcribed immediately afterward (and before the Big Move and subsequent ridiculous business) I probably would have skipped over it and gone straight onto the next one, because I am not fond of this episode. But since it was just sitting there waiting to be completed, with nothing else anywhere near, it was easier to push on with this than to get the groundwork laid for anything else, so here it is!
First of all, though, a disclaimer: I usually try to keep the tone of my recaps as neutral as possible, but I couldn't manage that with this one. I just really don't like this episode, and I'm afraid that shines through in the text. So, anyone who really loves the episode, be warned - you read this at your own peril!
Here it is, then: one recap in which I rattle on at length about Sam's deterioration, Dean's depression, Castiel's regression, and why I dislike this episode so very much, which mostly boils down to conceptual flaws, narrative imbalance, inconsistency and boredom.

Don't hold your breath for the next one - life seems determined not to slow down just yet!
