Bah. Why can't anything ever be easy?
You know that saying about waiting hours for a bus and then three come along all at once? Yeah, next Monday is turning out a bit like that.
The facts are these: after turning down the horrible marketing job, I thought 'sod it' and went to Marks & Spencer, seeing as how they are taking on seasonal staff at the moment and are reputed to be good employers. They immediately offered me a position on the customer service desk until the end of January, but only 20 hours a week, as all the full time positions had already gone. Better than nothing, I thought - I'd probably be even worse off financially, but it's a job. I'd be out of the house doing something productive. Great. Due to start next Monday, 10th November.
But then my email harrassment campaign aimed at the employment agencies around town started to pay off, and Kellys got me registered for a temporary position with Legal & General. Nothing exciting - just a very basic temp job, but full time and a better hourly rate than M&S, plus easier to get to. So, a no-brainer - although I'm kind of disappointed because I was all psyched up for M&S. Due to start next Monday, 10th November, pending references.
I have to admit to being a little dubious about the detail this reference check requires, however - I mean, seriously, the questions are pretty intrusive. 'If you have been unemployed, state which job centre you are registered with and what benefit you are claiming; if you have been travelling, please provide passport stamps'. For a short-term temp job? WTF?
Still. It's almost a certain thing. But now I have a letter from UWIC inviting me to interview for a permanent position...next Monday, 10th Nov, at 9.15am.
*bangs head against desk*
I can't be everywhere at once. I have to pull out of the M&S thing, because the hours and money at L&G are better, except that that isn't finalised yet. But then this interview complicates everything all over again! On the one hand, I don't want to turn down the possibility of a permanent job for the sake of a temporary one...but on the other, I don't want to turn down the near certainty of work for a mere maybe.
Gah.
Have emailed Daf at Kellys to find out if there is any leeway with the start date. If not, I may have to make a decision.
*sigh*
