1. Had a fun evening tonight hanging out with Small while the parents went off to a parent-teacher conference. Evidently, despite the autism diagnosis, she is doing really well and all her teachers are pleased with her. Several described her as 'quiet', 'shy' and 'polite'. We wondered if maybe they were confusing her with another child. But seriously, it's good to know that she behaves in school! She's been home with a cold for a couple of days, but was in an exuberant mood while I was there. We played rugby, tennis and basketball - no mean feat in such a tidgy garden! And she read me a story she's been writing, which was hilariously exciting, all acted out with voices and everything. She's such a scream. She turns 12 the week after next. Where did all those years go?

2. Small again. She had a hearing test this week that actually coincided with her hearing being down. For years there's been this ridiculous situation wherein she catches her first cold of the winter around about September/October and her hearing promptly becomes virtually non-existent, so the hearing clinic are phoned for an appointment to re-adjust her hearing aids, but this so-called 'emergency' appointment doesn't come through until February or March, by which time, after struggling for months, her hearing has improved again. The technician who sees her, in fact, has always refused to believe that her hearing fluctuates at all, and was so shocked by how deaf she is at the moment that she actually re-did the test four times because she didn't believe the result! The fluid in one ear is almost completely solid. Maybe now they'll get around to providing her with a second digital hearing aid, instead of just the one to switch between whichever ear is worse at any given time.

3. Being unemployed is very disorienting. I keep thinking it's Saturday and then get all confused trying to work out what day it actually is. And it's only been a week and a half. How do people who are retired ever keep track of the days?

4. Managed to completely miss the interview I was meant to have yesterday morning, for reasons that have to do with inaccessible location, ludicrous bus routes and timetabling, and me getting completely lost. Phoned them in the end to say I wasn't going to make it and just went back home again feeling very fed up and disgruntled. Back to the drawing board. Ah well. If the place is that difficult to get to, I wouldn't want to work there anyway! Which I'd suspected from the start, and it didn't look like a brilliant job anyway. I've got other applications in, and more to complete. It'll all come good eventually.

5. There's a new cat in the neighbourhood, little white chap with ginger spots, who keeps coming and yowling in our back garden, absolutely desperate to make friends. He's well fed and has a collar, so isn't a stray, just very friendly. In the absence of a nametag, I've decided to call him Fergus. It seems more polite to say, 'oh look, Fergus is back again' than, 'oh, it's that cat again'. Poppy runs around madly from window to window being nosy whenever he's around, so I took her out the back to say hello. Fergus was very keen to make her acquaintance, but she isn't used to other cats and spazzed out hissing and spitting a bit at first, which made him nervous as well. Then they kind of circled around a bit, going forwards and backwards sniffing at each other but never quite daring to get too close. Finally, they almost allowed their noses to touch, and I decided that was enough excitement for one day and brought Poppy back in. They can chat again another day. Honestly - it was like chaperoning a pair of twelve-year-olds!

6. New Supernatural tonight! For those lucky folks in the US that is. New Supernatural tomorrow for me! Yay!
