Well, the new series of Doctor Who is off to a steady trot this season. *G* That was a solid, amusing, unsensational episode.
Donna was not as annoying as she could have been. That was definitely of the good. As a one-off over-the-top character she worked okay, but as permanent companion she needed toning down a little. She had some great dialogue, perfect smackdown moments. "You're still wearing the same suit. Don't you ever change?" Hee. Loved the stupid scene where the Doctor and Donna were having a mimed comversation through opposite windows, although it did go on a bit longer than it needed or should have. Got a little worried when Donna started waxing lyrical to her grandfather about needing to find this special man to show her the stars and give her life meaning, or whatever - it's a very new-show Sarah Jane Smith kind of mentality, that, this pining for the Doctor to provide adventure and excitement instead of making the most of the life they've got. But I very much appreciated that it is so definitely the adventure and excitement she wants him for, after all the romantic yearnings of Rose and Martha.
Also glad to see the Doctor acknowledging the mistakes he made with Martha and being a little wary about letting Donna come with him, wanting to be sure she knows what she's getting herself into. And also perhaps a little wary about what he's getting himself into by taking her on board!
Was very sad to see the actor who played Donna's dad come up at the end as an obituary. :(
The little creatures born of fat were disturbingly adorable, no? And I enjoyed Sarah Lancashire's evil nanny - she's an excellent actress.
Oh, but the shock of seeing Rose! I couldn't avoid knowing beforehand that she was going to be making an appearance this season, but wasn't expecting her in the very first episode - that was the best moment, just for the sheer shock value, and the mystery it sets up that, presumably, will be woven into the rest of the series. Seeing her so briefly, and then having her just fade away like that - intriguing!
Roll on the rest of the season. :)
