I feel so bad for Dean, because all he wants is to make everything better. But the sad thing is - he does make things better, but in these early episodes, Sam is so used to having Dean take care of him that he takes it for granted. How much more healthy would Dean be, emotionally, if Sam and his father had just said "Thank you" or "good job" every once in awhile? Everything we see on screen does suggest that Dean's role as the caretaker of the family has been taken for granted by them all for so long that they barely even notice his efforts. Of course, here, Sam can be forgiven for not really paying much attention, because he's recently bereaved, living out his worst nightmare. But it takes a long, long time into the season for Sam to really become aware of how much pressure Dean is under, trying to hold things together, with little or no support or recognition.
I wonder, since John's journal says that Dean didn't talk for months after Mary's death, if Dean remembers what it's like to want to say something but not be able to? Because, I've read in cases where someone just stops talking, it's not always that they don't want to talk, it's that the trauma was so deep even if they wanted to they couldn't. Dean and this kid have a whole lot in common, and while it breaks my heart to see it, seeing how brave Dean at 4 years old was, I feel a lot of pride for him. Everything about Dean's interaction with Lucas, handling him so gently and compassionately, suggests that he does remember pretty clearly - the moment he learns of Lucas's trauma and connects it to the withdrawn behaviour they witnessed at the station, he clearly empathises enormously. Makes your heart break for Wee!Dean, no?
And that's some creative arm arrangement, no? I'll bet they didn't bring that kid on set until the last possible moment. But it does make me curious - why is it Sam who pulls her out, and not Dean? Maybe because Dean wants to comfort Lucas? Very creative! Although we do catch a quick flash of the panties she has on.
Dean kicked the door in, so Sam went charging past into the bathroom while he was still regaining his balance - it's how they almost always play it when doors need to be kicked in. Plus, yeah, Dean was the one who formed the bond with Lucas, so it makes sense for him to be the one to hang onto the boy while Sam saves Andrea.
