Sam is very carefully hiding the mounting danger from Dean, who has no reason to suspect that it exists - he believes the danger is over. It's one of the most interesting facets of the season so far, both the implications for the future, and the reasoning behind it. New season, new shift in character dynamics. It's awesome and I'm loving it.
