I've had exactly the same thing happen to me with the post on several occasions. Once I actually saw the card plop through the letterbox so I chased after the postie and guess what? He didn't even have the package with him! My theory is that they can't be bothered to carry large packages around with them so they just stick a card through the door and leave it to you to go and pick it up from the sorting office. And it's always "48 hours" now isn't it, which is really frustrating!
