Well, actually, more general weekend guff first. It's been pretty lazy so far, starting on Friday when I took a nice long lunch break for a meal out with my Mum, brother and Small for Mum's birthday. It's so nice these days that Simon has enough money that we can split the cost of stuff like that! Then after work in the afternoon - I was alone and useless, because of a) being well satedand b) headache - back to theirs for a little party tea and family visiting and whatnot. I love birthdays in our family.

Yesterday was properly lazy. Went for a walk around Roath Park Lake, which is always relaxing. Wanted to see if the swans are nesting yet, and they are, and so are the coots. I love seeing the coots build their nests - they start right at the bottom of the lake and slowly build upward, so that the end result is a little tower that looks like nothing so much as a miniature island just floating in the middle of the water but not going anywhere. And the baby coots, when they hatch, are adorable - like mini punks with these bright orange feathers sticking up on top of their heads. With nesting season in full force, it really does feel like spring now.

Also did a load of baking, and had a mini-marathon, watching the first four episodes of Rome season one, which made me all happy and sad about having everyone alive again. What with being all about the fall of the Roman Republic and all, that show manages to kill an impressive number of characters over the course of 22 episodes! I'd forgotten how much I love season one.

And then, of course, there was the new season of Doctor Who. For a season opener, I liked Smith and Jones so much more than New Earth last year. The plot was pretty simple, typical Doctor Who sci fi, and didn't have such enormous holes in it that they distracted attention from what was going on. And Ten was very, very Ten.

I liked the Judoon.

"Judoon.
Platoon.
On the Moon!"

I liked 'em because they were giant space rhinos, and because they were mindless flunkies incapable of even the slightest hint of flexibility, and because they drew on the backs of peoples' hands with marker pens to distinguish between those they'd tested and those they hadn't. They amused me.

So did the little doctor chappie who actually stood up to them and tried to take charge and represent the people in his care, and the whole human race, because all the other extras were annoying me intensely with all their weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I liked Martha, too. She's got brains. I just hope she's allowed to keep them as her adventures with the Doctor continue.

And I liked that although Ten is still lonely, that fact isn't getting him down - with Nine, he was so post-traumatic he needed someone, desperately, whether he realised it or not. With Ten, he's more stable. He misses Rose, misses having someone in his life, but he's pretty laid-back about it, getting on with his life as he always does - constantly auditioning the people he meets as potential new companions, because he's never on his own for long. He's always liked to have company on his travels, someone to talk to and think aloud to and bounce ideas off. Martha has a brain, proved her value on this little escapade, so right now she fits the bill.

Yay for a new season!
