1. I was aware as I walked home from work tonight that my foot was hurting, but what I wasn't expecting was to take my boot off and find my sock soaked in blood! Evidently, a bit of nail on one toe has been digging a deep gouge into the toe alongside it. Ouch. This has happened before, but it has never been quite so bloody! Will have to take slightly stronger curative/precautionary measures in future.

2. Today's city centre street entertainment included a man balancing one-footed on a tightrope while playing a violin.

I kid you not. Look:

3. Also today, the cast-iron willpower I have been exerting for the last many months finally buckled and crumpled and I caved and bought books.

It's all amazon's fault. Amazon and the BBC are among the only websites that can be accessed on the computers in work, and there wasn't much else to do today (more on that later). I have never in my life felt so up-to-date on current affairs, but could only sit reading the news for so long. So I found myself browsing books on amazon. My wishlist is now about a mile long! Then at lunchtime I was drawn as if by a magnet to the bookshops in town, craving actual books I could hold in my hand...and the next thing I knewI had bought two. Simon Young's AD 500 and Michael Wood's In Search of the Dark Ages.

Yeah, I know. But the book I'm reading at the moment is an actual novel! It's a historical novel, but still a novel. Edward Charles' In the Shadow of Lady Jane. Have you read it, [livejournal.com profile] sherrilina? It's definitely your sort of thing.

4. Also this week, I learned that my cat adores chicken soup. I already knew that she loves garlic bread.

5. I am very sad that Woolworths is closing down. :( Where else on the high street can you pop in to buy a magazine or some sweets, and come away with a roll of gaffer tape, new shoelaces, glassware, throw cushions, sewing kit, toaster, crockery and cutlery, baby clothes, CDs and DVDs, paintbrushes, dustbin, ironing board cover, dust sheets, and just about anything and everything else you could think of?

I am especially sad because I wanted to pop in after work tonight to see what they had left, but the doors were already locked at 5.30. I think they were just rationing customers - allowing in a few at a time. But I didn't wait to find out. I might try again tomorrow before work, if they open at their usual early time.

In other news, it looks like my temp gig is ending tomorrow. On the one hand, I don't really care that much, because it's boring as hell, I was probably going to finish next Friday anyway, and unless something goes horribly wrong (no confirmed start date yet) I've got something way, way better to go to in the New Year - about seven grand a year better.

On the other hand, however, I could really use the salary for next week. Plus, I'm feeling kind of outraged on a point of principle. See, the company have been very insistent that if any of us temps want to leave, we have to give a full week's notice. One of the others gave only 36 hours notice and they kicked up a huge fuss about it. So how much notice do they give us? Barely 24 hours.

Seriously. I had a message left on my voicemail from Kellys at 4.50pm asking me to call them. If I hadn't checked my messages in time - my battery might have been dead, or something - I wouldn't have been able to return that call until tomorrow. Would they have then given me the same news, with only 7/8 hours notice? Tell me in the morning that I'd be finishing that afternoon? Swines.

Part of me was expecting it. There are 8 temps left. The volume of work has been pretty low, so that we've spent a lot of time twiddling our thumbs. But one was leaving tomorrow anyway, and five others are moving onto telephony training next week. Myself and another were planning to leave next week or the week after, and it is the two of us who have been given notice. So, part of me was expecting it. As temps, we pretty much have no rights at all. It is just the principle of it, that they can demand a week's notice but then leave a message at 4.50pm and hope we pick it up in time to be given 24 hours notice. Bastards.

Also, our designated Kellys representative - who made such a big deal about how he was our manager, not L&G, and would take good care of us - he gave us an assurance that we would have a week's notice. He's a slimy little git, mind, so I didn't believe him. He still said it, though - he's got a real silver tongue, and might want to watch himself. Going around giving false assurances just for the sake of sounding good could get him into real trouble one of these days.

So, yeah. Part of me isn't surprised and doesn't really care, but another part of me is really pissed off at the way it's all been handled.

I am very tempted to go in tomorrow and just sit around doing no work at all. However, I know I won't be able to achieve this - for one thing, the boredom would kill me! I might let myself be late, for once, however, if I do make it to Woolies on the way...

Roll on Cardiff Uni and an official start date!
