1. Woke up yesterday morning with a prickly throat. By the end of the day it had developed into a raging cold. Today I can barely speak. It's fun.
2. Went to the jobcentre this morning to finalise paperwork for my jobseeker's allowance and pick up the form for housing benefit. Have decided I need to get this alternate employment thing sorted out sooner rather than later. I'm going to be unbelievably skint otherwise, and I've got used to being able to afford things during as my time as a self-supporting and gainfully employed individual over the past ten years. Now if I could just regain the ability to speak in time for interview #5 on Wednesday…
3. The light in my living room – which is dark at the best of times – blew last night and took the fuse with it. The fuse at least was an easy fix. But the ceiling is too high for me to replace the bulb myself; even standing on a chair I can't reach. This seems to me to be a serious design flaw, which is what I get for living in an old Victorian villa. I need to meet more tall people - where's Sam Winchester when I need him?! Or possibly I should invest in a sturdy stepladder, which I would then have nowhere to store. Not that I'd want to change the bulb myself anyway, having been leery of them ever since one exploded in my hand one time. I suppose I'll have to get over that phobia at some point, though. Can't be dependent on other people to change my light bulbs forever!
4. Went to the local RHS Flower Show on Friday with my Mum. It was incredibly cold - over 10 degrees down on the same time last year. The flowers were pretty, and I bought a gorgeous little aquilegia and a new diascia, but the cold defeated us in the end and we had to retreat in search of warmer climes rather earlier than originally intended. Also, the system they had set up to buy tickets and then get into the show was farcical and involved queuing twice, a long and tedious process I shan't bore you with. However, there were a few very pretty show gardens – would be nice to have a few more for the entrance money, though. The Doctor Who garden was best!
5. It was my brother's birthday yesterday. I never did find those t-shirts I'd bought for him and then promptly lost, but did bake a very nice birthday cake as compensation.
6. We had Auntie Margie drop in for a chat and shoulder to cry on a couple of times yesterday. This is my mother's stepmother's first husband's half-sister – she's come to us the last couple of Christmases, so has been mentioned in this journal previously, although I doubt anyone remembers. Anyway, she's pretty shaken up at the moment because her sister Sheila was found dead in her flat on Thursday. She's even more shaken up since, she said, a couple of weeks ago she had a dream in which a man came running after her calling out that the police were looking for her, and then that dream came true last Thursday when she came home from the shops to find a neighbour calling out that the police were looking for her! A neighbour had reported that they hadn't seen Sheila moving around for a day or two, and the police came to investigate and found her dead on the sofa. Now, she had been on a downward slide for a while and was increasingly senile, although undiagnosed because she refused to go to the doctor, but her death still came as a shock for Margie, who is now in bits because she's worried she should have done more. But there really isn't anything else she could have done - she did Sheila's shopping for her ever week, and called in as often as Sheila would allow. Sheila was an incredibly difficult person even before the dementia started to set in, and had become the kind of really dotty old lady who never bathed or changed her clothes or even ate, despite having cupboards full of brand new outfits and shelves full of food. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do for someone. The coroner's report was due today – we're thinking probably a stroke or her heart – and then hopefully once the funeral is over Margie can start to move forward again.
7. New SN this week! Yay! There are so many spoilers floating around, but my willpower is strong, and the longer I go without clicking on those tempting links, the easier it is to just scroll on by.
8. Also, we now have a release date for the region 2 DVD for season three – 25th August. Means, as usual, that there probably won't be much in the way of extras on it, alas, but still – DVD! Yay! It's a full season release for once, as well, due to the shortened season, instead of stupidly releasing it in two parts as usual.
9. Need to try to assemble a few thoughts about this week's Doctor Who. Having a cold plays havoc with my ability to think! Maybe later. Or tomorrow. Or later in the week, when my brain cells have come back out of hiding...
