llywela: (cats-PoppyAlfie01)

I appear to be coming down with a cold, if today's sore throat and headache are anything to go by. Marvellous. Sincerely hope it doesn't actually come to anything much!

Last week's week off work positively flew by in a haze of wonderful non-productivity - spent most of the week lounging around pretending to watch DVDs while actually watching the cats. Also spent a lovely afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] femsc, who popped in for a cuppa and chat - and very nice it was, too, to meet indoors this time, warm and dry and cosy, after our last encounter, which took place in an open field in torrential rain! Although it has to be said that the flooding did make that encounter rather memorable!

Then had my big sis and her husband to stay for the weekend when they came to collect their kitten, wee Sidney (who is now renamed Jasper, and I really must get the hang of calling him that!). They were meant to be staying Saturday-Monday, but ended up staying on an extra night thanks to a pile up on the motorway on Monday causing tailbacks that would have delayed them for hours, which is not what you want for a frightened baby kitty who has just left home for the very first time. While they were here, we also took the opportunity to go out for a family meal Saturday night to celebrate Deb and Ray's 5th wedding anniversary - how time flies!

We'll just gloss over the fact that when they left yesterday morning they managed to lock little Alfie in the box room, and since I had already gone to work by then he was trapped all day without food, water or litter tray until I got home and discovered his predicament...

Meanwhile, young Alfie has settled in wonderfully well (minor dramas such as being accidentally locked up in small rooms all day notwithstanding) and he and Poppy are getting along really well already, much to my relief and delight. Poppy still finds him a bit boisterous, but seems to enjoy playing with him anyway - and it is good for her, as she is getting less exercise since we moved (doesn't seem to like roaming around the gardens hereabouts as much as the ones near the flat) and has been getting a little pudgy as a result, being a greedy girl. The biggest problem I have with the two of them now is that Alfie has already figured out how to get out through the catflap and is absolutely desperate to explore (not to mention to follow Poppy wherever she goes), but since he is far too small to be allowed out and about, this means I now have to keep it locked most of the time, restricting Poppy's freedom (and preventing Macavity from popping in to pinch food).

Alfie still isn't a great eater and won't even contemplate cat meat, but he seems to be growing steadily anyway, so clearly the milk and biscuit diet is sufficient for his needs. He is always intensely interested in whatever I have got to eat, but that doesn't necessarily translate into wanting to share it with me - except for yesterday morning when he tried to climb on my plate and started chewing on a croissant! Evidently the problem is that he thinks he is human, rather than cat...
