Oct. 8th, 2009 02:26 pmIn work we have a chap named Alec. He is a business development manager, middle-aged, married with grown-up children, enjoys gardening and regularly brings in the fruits of his labour to share out among colleagues - anything from homemade raspberry jam to oversized marrows. In short, he is about as far removed from a hot young transgenic as you can get. But still, he is called Alec, and every time I hear or say his name I think of Dark Angel, which is generally guaranteed to cheer me up.
Plus, having Alec the business development manager working just across the landing is useful for more than free fresh vegetables every once in a while. The university has recently upgraded its Open Access Room PCs, which meant that there were a bunch of older but still perfectly functional PCs - complete with flatscreen monitors - retired from service and waiting to be scrapped. Thanks to Alec instead arranging for them to be dished out on a first-come-first-serve basis to any staff wishing to take advantage of the opportunity - and thanks especially to having Alec just next door, so that I was one of the first to know about the scheme - I was just able to take delivery of one of these PCs, Alec giving me a lift with it to the house. Not for me, though, but for my Mum and Dad, whose computer practically came out of the Ark and barely even turns on any more. Hopefully this one will work a little better, at the very least!
Working in an IT department has its advantages. *G*
