Jul. 27th, 2009 08:20 pmSo, about three weeks ago my parents were adopted by a young stray cat. She was very definite about it: this was where she was going to live, no argument. Sat on the doorstep and cried until she was allowed in - food alone was not enough; she wanted human love and companionship and a home, as well. They took her to the vet, who said that she was about a year old - between 12 and 18 months - and had never had kittens. He was 95% certain she had been spayed, but couldn't give an absolute guarantee. She wasn't microchipped, and no one has been looking for her or answered any 'cat found' notices. Definitely stray, but also definitely a domestic cat far more comfortable indoors than out - having been taken in, she would cry at first if anyone tried to take her outside, in case they didn't let her in again. Presumably she had been someone's pet but then either got very lost somehow or was abandoned, maybe because of the recession, or maybe sheer wanton neglect, who knows. So, the parents allowed her to adopt them. Small was delighted and named her Chloe.

95% certain she had been spayed, the vet said. Since then, her tummy has become more and more swollen. Maybe she's just getting plump due to having regular meals again, we all rather hopefully said. Yeah, no such luck. Dad took her to the vet again tonight and he confirmed that she is pregnant. Due in about 3 weeks. Apparently, the vet offered to abort the kittens, which took us all by surprise as I wouldn't have thought they'd offer that at this late stage. Dad thought it might be a good idea, save a lot of trouble for everyone. Small went ballistic at the mere thought of killing kittens. World War Three ensued, I am told - very glad to merely be on the end of a telephone and not in the house!
Our annual family holiday is coming up at the end of August. Mum was already stressing about what to do with the hedgehog, whose cage is too big to come along for the ride as the hamster used to. Chloe then added to the worry - the other cat, Chess, can be left alone in the house for a week with someone just checking on her a few times, no worries, as she is on a dry food diet and doesn't much like people anyway. But Chloe is very much a people cat, likes to have company. Plus, the two cats keep having spats - not ideal for being left alone together for any length of time. And now this - kittens due just days before the holiday.
I've said I'll stay home and look after the menagerie; their house is only a 20 minute walk from mine, so it wouldn't be too much trouble. It'll be a shame not to see Pev one last time, as this is intended to be the last year we all meet up down there - find somewhere different for next year. But I've been there so many times already, I don't need to see it again. I've already had a holiday this year, when Chris and Nikki were here the other week; that was enough of a break for me. A week at home with the animals would be restful as well. So, that's probably what will happen. We'll see.
I've also said that I'll take one of the kittens. Poppy will just have to adjust to not being the spoiled only one any more - and she at least shouldn't be scared of a kitten the way she is most other cats! That'll be one less for them to find a home for at least. As for the rest...well, we'll just have to wait and see how many there are. She's young, so the litter should hopefully be small. Time will tell, I suppose.
