so that was Christmas
Dec. 27th, 2008 07:46 amChristmas turned out kind of mixed, in the end.
Small slept over at my place Christmas Eve, as planned, but woke up at 6am Christmas morning with a headache and sore throat, which I also had. Me, I felt kinda queasy all of Christmas Day, but not enough to spoil my fun (or my dinner!) and got no worse, although my throat is still very sore. For Small, though, it was just the beginning.
Christmas morning was really good, all of us gathered around to open our presents together. Not a bad haul. I got a new coat and a pretty little bedside lamp, some books, diary, various smellies and sweets, new scarf and hat set, a smart top to start my new job, etc. After dinner, D&R left to get to R's mother in Cornwall for the evening and rest of the week. She lives in Penzance, about as far as it is possible to get. Nice long journey, but they made good time, what with it being Christmas Day and all the roads empty and all. Then later Mum's stepbrother arrived to collect Nan and Auntie Margie, who were going back to his for tea.
Once they'd gone, Small sank like a stone. I spent most of the afternoon and evening completely trapped on the sofa with her draped all over me, limp as a wet dishrag. Then Mum was up all night with her, as her temperature shot up and she became delirious and was convinced she was dying. I went down again yesterday, and again ended up just sitting with her for hours. She was still feverish and also kept vomiting, all over the floor, all over the sofa...once or twice she even managed to hit the bucket!
Finally called NHS Direct, who said to take her to the Out-of-Hours Clinic at the Infirmary, with a 9.30pm appointment. Now, the Cardiff Royal Infirmary has been used as a location for Doctor Who on numerous occasions, both the exterior and interior, most notably for the season one episode The Empty Child.
Small has always been scared of that episode, so between that and the fever freaked out ever so slightly at the prospect of running into 'gas mask people' while visiting the doctor. She eventually managed to calm herself down by remembering that she knows what to do if she runs into a gas mask person - tell them to go to their room!
The doctor wasn't much help after all that. Just said it was a viral throat infection, to keep cooling her off and give her lots of fluids and take her back if she gets any worse. I'll have to call later and see if she is any better.
So, that was Christmas. The telly was good, at least! Really enjoyed the Doctor Who Christmas special, which was a fun romp, and also the new Wallace and Gromit, also a fun romp. ETA And the Larkrise to Candleford Christmas special was utterly charming, really whetting my appetite for the new series.
Am now trying to decide when it might be considered safe to hit the sales - too early and you get trampled in the stampede, too late and there is nothing left in my size. See, I have a new job starting in just over a week and also a family wedding at the beginning of March - both the perfect excuse to dig deep and splash out a little while the prices are right!
