all change?
Aug. 22nd, 2008 07:54 pmMy parents had an offer accepted on a new house today. If the purchase goes through okay, they could take possession by mid-October and move in by New Year - it's a repossession, so the house is already empty, but needs some work done, which brought the price down but will delay the move.
They've lived in their current house since they got married - 36 years! That's a long time. It feels a little weird to think of them moving someplace new, but the new house isn't far and they've been talking about moving for a long time now. It is unlikely that my brother will ever move out, Small is growing up fast, and the neighbourhood has been on a downward slide in recent years. Time to upgrade and move on. With everything that could go wrong, it is very scary! Exciting scary, though.
The plan is to buy the new house, move, have some work done on the old house, and then rent it out for a few years before selling. A nd they've told me that if I get a decent job by the time it is ready, they will let me rent it for less than it would go commercially. Which would be amazing after living in this damp, cramped little shoebox. The rent they mentioned would only be £65 more than I pay now...but £65 extra rent every month is not really a small amount. The council tax and utilities would also be higher than I currently pay. Even on my old salary, I think I'd find it a struggle, and I really would like to be able to save a bit of money. I've got an application to a housing association being processed at the moment - having been made redundant, and the fact that Small stays with me so regularly as respite all counts in my favour. I don't know how long the waiting list is, but if they accept me I might get a two-bedroom flat for a lot less rent than I'm paying now. Which would allow me to really start saving and looking to the future.
But it is all ifs and buts at the moment. If that house purchase goes through, but it might not. If I get a decent job, but I might not. If the housing association accepts me, but they might not, or the waiting list might be really long.
I had to turn down a job interview yesterday. I had an email inviting me to this interview, but it is next week, and they weren't prepared to reschedule for me, even though they were giving me less than a week's notice anyway. It's a shame, but them's the breaks. At least it means the latest batch of applications is starting to come through processing now! I seem to have been saying this for months now, but hopefully soon one of them will come good.
So, really, only time will tell what is going to happen. Just have to sit tight, and wait and see.
