light at the end of the tunnel
Mar. 19th, 2007 08:16 pmRealised while scurrying from door to door collecting kids for Monday Club tonight that we've almost reached the end of the session for another year. We run from October till Easter, so there are only two weeks left, and then I get my Monday nights to myself for another six months. Phew!
It's gone really quickly this year. Time was that by this stage in the session I'd be absolutely hanging out for that light at the end of the tunnel - such a drag, having that commitment. Plus, some of the kids we've had in the past have been absolute hoodlums. But we haven't got a bad bunch this year - for a couple of years now. They are loud, and have their off weeks, but none of them are malicious, and that makes all the difference. Plus, possibly, after ten years I've probably got better at dealing with the troublesome ones now!
I was just thinking that tonight - that it's been ten years now since I took over the minibus chaperone duty for Monday Club. My Mum used to do it, and it was when Small moved in with us that I took over. So, yeah, this is my tenth session. Sometimes it feels like longer - but sometimes it seems like no time at all! Where did those years go...?
We'll be losing some of our kids after this year - Club is open for kids aged 4-11, although we tend to get quite a few starting a little earlier, aged three. We've got a whole bunch who are turning 11 this year, and so will be moving onto the Friday night Youth Club after the summer, and I'm not involved with that. Some of them have been coming since they were 3/4 years old, and I've seen them growing up, so whenever a group like that moves on it's always a poignant moment.
But there are plenty more little 'uns coming through to take their place...
