"Of course they're going to fight back!"

WOOT!!
*dances around journal*
My driving instructor was just on TV. There he was! On Doctor Who Confidential, helping Mickey out of a Dalek! And then twiddling his remote control while the Dalek-Cybermen battle at Torchwood was being filmed. Woohoo!!
Ahem. Sorry. That was the most exciting part of my night so far
Oh yeah, and there was an episode, too. And what an episode it was.
I'll say up front, it wasn't perfect. But I'm in a forgiving-the-flaws mood, so not going to nitpick. I just want to delight.
Yvonne! Okay, she got Cyberman-ed, but she deserves respect for her scathing attitude right to the end. "Do some research. We haven't got a central Earth authority."
Mickey! Back, and fighting, and being all cool, sliding across the floor with his great big gun to shoot down Cybermen and Daleks, and the Doctor kissing his forehead as like paternal affection and pride and...just love it! Kickass!Mickey!
Rose! Facing down the Daleks just by shouting at them and bluffing, Doctor-style. See how she's learned to stand on her own two feet when the Doctor isn't around and she isn't busy panicking over him!
Pete and Jackie! Getting a fairytale ending of sorts, with Jackie being Jackie and Alt!Pete being Alt!Pete but with enough of This'Verse!Pete in him for it to work, and his priorities being bang on, and going on about Jackie not being his Jackie, and Rose not being his daughter, but then belying all that denial by his actions and saving and accepting Rose and thus turning into the Dad she's wanted all along.
Was a bit nonplussed about how This'Verse!Cybermen newly created got sucked into the Void, but feel prepared to overlook this. Am sure I could come up with a technobabble theory to explain, if necessary.
Cybermen were fab this time around, though. Wanting to upgrade the universe, and totally not understanding why the humans were fighting back.
Doctor: "You're everywhere, you're in their homes and you have their children! Of course they're going to fight back!"
And the Daleks are always fab. There are four of them now - only three last season. They got funding to build a new one, hence the fourth - I had a driving lesson with it's head rolling around under the seat
Loved the Doctor here. It pains me to say again that this is probably because he and Rose were again apart for long stretches - Rose was much better with Mickey, and the Doctor was much better with Jackie! Loved his puzzlement over Time Lord science and then finally understanding, and facing down the Cybermen, and then facing down the Daleks, and totally matchmaking Pete and Jackie because he wanted Rose to have that family unit she'd always lacked and already knew what he was going to have to do.
"Pete Tyler. I knew you when you were dead."
The Doctor sneaking up behind Rose to put the universe!hopping disc around her neck, and holding Pete's eyes while he did so. The Doctor and Pete really developed a great understanding in their few meetings! The Doctor is always hero first, everything else second. He was quite prepared to give Rose up, set up a whole new life for her - it's Rose that wasn't so willing to let go.
Loved Jackie so much when she was so stunned to see Pete, then jumped on him, then screamed at him for not letting her go back for Rose. And then love for Pete when he risked everything to go back and get Rose himself.
Jake was also back, which was cool. Previous episodes make more sense now, with hindsight allowing the whole picture to be seen. I still think the writers have got a lot to learn about seasonal arcs, though - the individual episodes need to be able to standalone a lot more than they do instead of being quite so heavy-handed.
Was very sad for technician Raj. Knew he was going to die - well, he was blatantly canon-fodder, but Mr Instructor had told me all about filming his death scene, which kind of confirmed it. He'd also told me all the details about the Daleks and where they came from, their names and individuality, what the Genesis Ark really was, and all kinds of information about how the big battle scenes were filmed
They don't get much margin for error with all the explosions, apparently - not enough time to rehearse so they have to get it right first time and then just carry on covered with debris!
The bitch!fest between the Daleks and Cybermen was fab. The Daleks ruled, there - absolutely ruled.
"You are only better than us at one thing: dying"
"It's not war, it's pest control."
And bad wolf is still following Rose around. Quite right, too - she scattered those words throughout time and space but good!
Yay for Pete, Jackie and Mickey holding hands at the end, watching Rose grieve, waiting for her to be ready to turn to them for solace - a united family there for her.
I think I'm sadder to lose Mickey and Jackie (and Pete) than Rose.
The sentimental stuff was a bit overly sentimental for my tastes - I do prefer subtle. But it was well done, and I'm glad the Doctor never said the words 'I love you' because I just wouldn't have believed it.
Rose: "I love you."
The Doctor: "Quite right."
Rose was in love with the Doctor. No question. Was he in love with her? No, I don't think so. He loved her very deeply, no question about that, either. She filled an enormous gap in his life after the Time War and for that reason he was more emotionally dependent on her than any other companion he's ever had. But did he have the same vision of forever as her? No. How can he? She's human and he's a Time Lord. Forever means completely different things to them both.
So now Rose gets her perfect ever after with her family - Pete and Jackie (and baby ). And Mickey, because it looks like she's stuck with him. Maybe not as a couple, but he's definitely part of the family, surrogate son to Pete and Jackie. And they probably will end up together, eventually - who else could ever understand either of them?
And she will always mourn the life she's lost with the Doctor.
And the Doctor is alone again - but maybe not for long...
Didn't like the cliffhanger ending, though. Way to kill the mood. A good symbol of 'life goes on', though, I suppose.
